CALSTART is a mission-driven industry organization focused on transportation decarbonization and clean air for all.
For over 30 years, it’s been CALSTART’s mission to develop, assess, and implement large-scale, zero-emission transportation solutions to mitigate climate change and support economic growth. CALSTART works with businesses, organizations, governments, and communities to create real-life impact toward clean air and equitable access to clean transportation for all. CALSTART provides scientific, technical and policy support for regulatory development and clean technology and infrastructure acceleration.
Intern Project:
Since its 2018 launch, the program has built significant momentum through the Global MOU on Zero-Emission Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles. The Global MOU sets a worldwide ambition and standard for countries and industry and now counts 43 national signatories and 300+ industry endorsers.
Off-road vehicles and machinery are estimated to contribute 8–10% of total transport sector CO₂ emissions worldwide, a strategic part of the program's work is the Off-road segment — focused on ports, mining, and construction equipment — coordinated through the Global Off-Road Working Group. The leadership and scalability of programs like California's CORE incentive model have shown how a point-of-sale funding approach can offset the cost of zero-emission equipment at scale — offering a proof point that the broader on-road MHDV effort can draw on as it pushes for wider adoption and demonstrating how policy can help accelerate the transition internationally.
This internship offers the opportunity to work within the Global Commercial Vehicle Drive to Zero program, especially on its off-road workstream. The intern will support the Working Group's efforts to extend the program's policy architecture, research, and market acceleration approach to ports, mining, and construction equipment — including hands-on work with tools like o-ZETI, the global database for zero-emission off-road equipment, alongside reference models like CORE. This contributes to the broader effort to bring off-road decarbonization to the same level of international coordination already achieved on the on-road side.
Intern Project Key Deliverables:
Update and maintain the full OZETI and ZETI Database, including data collection, verification, cleaning, and organization for technical specificationsCross check CORE, NYTVIP, WAZIP, HVIP and other relevant incentive programs to improve database accuracy and completeness
Coordinate with team members to gather input and update endorsers onboarding slides and related materials
Research and identify high-potential, high-quality organizations for future endorsers recruitment cycles
Support data analysis, internal briefings and presentations related to ZE-MHDVs market development and stakeholder engagement

Tips for Your Remote Data Engineer Intern Job Search
Build a public pipeline portfolio on GitHub
Remote hiring managers can't watch you work, so your GitHub does the talking. Publish at least two end-to-end projects that show data ingestion, transformation with dbt or Pandas, and loading into a cloud warehouse like BigQuery or Redshift. Write clear README files explaining your design choices.
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote data engineer intern openings from across the U.S. in one place, so you can find roles that match your stack and apply directly without sorting through unrelated listings. Applying in the first few days keeps you ahead of the volume surge most remote postings attract.
Prove async communication skills upfront
Remote data engineer intern interviews often include a take-home technical task. Treat your submission write-up as a communication sample, not just a code dump. Explain your approach, flag trade-offs, and document your steps clearly. Hiring managers use this to judge how you'll collaborate asynchronously on a distributed team.
Filter for remote-first engineering cultures
Look for postings that mention fully distributed teams, async-first workflows, or tools like Notion, Linear, or Confluence for documentation. These signals indicate the company has already built the infrastructure to support remote interns, which means faster onboarding and real project ownership from week one.
Remote Data Engineer Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote data engineer intern job?
Target companies that already run distributed engineering teams, since they have the tooling and culture to onboard remote interns effectively. Remote employers screen for self-direction, clear written communication in tools like Slack and Jira, and hands-on fluency with SQL, Python, and cloud data platforms such as BigQuery or Snowflake. A GitHub portfolio with documented pipeline projects gives you a concrete edge over candidates who only list coursework.
Which companies hire remote data engineer interns?
Companies hiring remote data engineer interns right now include Calstart, Eide Bailly, and Ensono, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Remote-first software firms, fintech platforms, and distributed healthcare data teams make up the largest share of postings for this role.
Can you get a remote data engineer intern job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level roles are harder to land because you're expected to work independently from the start without in-person guidance. Focus on companies with strong async documentation cultures and apply with a GitHub portfolio showing pipeline or transformation projects you built yourself. Contributing to open-source data tools and completing hands-on cloud certifications also signals remote readiness to hiring managers.
Do you need a degree for remote data engineer intern jobs?
Not always. Many remote employers prioritize demonstrated technical skills over a completed degree, particularly for intern roles where they expect to invest in training. Candidates who show Python and SQL proficiency, documented project work, and familiarity with data orchestration tools like Airflow or dbt can compete effectively even without a four-year credential in progress.
Which industries hire the most remote data engineer interns?
Remote data engineer intern roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services and Technology & Software, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. These sectors rely on distributed data teams that ingest, clean, and model large volumes of data, making remote intern contributors a practical fit for ongoing pipeline and infrastructure work.
