Senior Power BI / Decision Intelligence Developer
Position Overview
- Position Type: Part-Time Consultant / Business Intelligence Specialist
- Target Allocation: 12–16 hours/week average (Note: Workload increases substantially during active dashboard construction phases, multi-agency onboarding waves, user acceptance testing, and final platform performance tuning).
- Location: Remote (U.S. Based) with periodic travel to Tallahassee, FL as required.
- Technical Reality: This project requires building highly specialized decision-intelligence dashboards rather than generic KPI displays. Reports must surface actionable anomaly data while preserving strict forensic evidence and source traceability.
- Compensation Type: Milestone / Deliverable-Based Fixed-Price Engagement.
This platform will unify statewide oversight, tracking abnormal spending patterns, contract vulnerabilities, and fraud/waste/abuse risks across up to 35 state agencies. Because this is a high-visibility, firm-fixed-price (FFP) state government contract, you will maintain absolute technical accountability for ensuring that reports perform under strict quantitative limits, including maintaining dashboard page loads under 5 seconds and query filter responses under 2 seconds.
Principal Responsibilities
- Decision Intelligence Engineering: Develop advanced decision-intelligence dashboards that present automated anomaly and risk results alongside the granular, supporting transactional evidence needed by forensic investigators.
- Persona-Based Architecture: Build role-based workspace layouts that seamlessly toggle between high-level executive summaries for senior leadership and deep drill-through detail views for agency analysts.
- Scalable Multi-Agency Partitioning: Configure robust security boundaries to build agency-specific data views without creating separate, fragmented codebases or report files.
- Security Framework Enforcement: Implement rigorous role-based access control (RBAC) and row-level security (RLS) data-governance models to ensure individual state agencies can never see cross-agency data without explicit authorization.
- Value-Realization Modeling: Design and embed standardized, repeatable reporting metrics to quantify statewide oversight impacts, including potential cost avoidance, financial recoveries, identified risk exposure, generated investigative referrals, and realized oversight efficiencies.
- Performance Optimization: Execute deep query performance tuning, data modeling refinement, and calculation optimization to guarantee compliance with legally binding speed and latency contract thresholds.
- Data Quality & Lifecycle Validation: Build embedded data quality and ledger reconciliation reports to verify the continuous field completeness and cross-system correlation accuracy of the underlying data layers.
- Training & UAT Support: Lead hands-on report training sessions and facilitate user acceptance testing (UAT) workshops with state agency program staff, ensuring full system handover.
- Experience Baseline: 8+ years of comprehensive business intelligence, reporting infrastructure, or data analytics experience.
- Tool Stack Depth: 5+ years of advanced, hands-on enterprise Power BI development experience.
- Advanced Code Engineering: Mastery of advanced DAX expressions and Power Query/M script language for complex column manipulation and semantic modeling.
- Architecture Skill: Expert understanding of dimensional data modeling, star schemas, semantic layer development, and enterprise data warehousing.
- Detail Provisioning: Proven history configuring advanced drill-through actions, contextual filters, and transaction-level details views that retain full lineage to cloud data tables.
- Data Export Design: Experience establishing uniform reporting frameworks and export-ready formatting parameters for pristine PDF and Excel output retention.
- Cloud Integration: Documented experience connecting Power BI directly to advanced Azure data-source architectures.
- Collaborative Skills: Strong background participating in user requirements workshops, mapping business needs, and executing structured validation test scripts.
- Government Context: Verifiable history delivering data analytics or business intelligence solutions for local, state, military, or federal government entities.
- Accessibility Awareness: Structural familiarity with Section 508 accessibility guidelines and government reporting standards.
- Vetting & Location: Must be a U.S.-based citizen or resident. Must be able to successfully clear an FDLE Level II background screening (including fingerprinting) within 5 business days of contract award.
- Prior experience configuring analytics dashboards inside secure Azure Government cloud environments.
- Hands-on experience developing reports that pull directly from Azure Databricks workspaces and Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 (ADLS Gen2) foundations.
- Background building specialized dashboards for fraud detection, improper payments, procurement risk, contract auditing, or investigative case management.
- Experience deploying reports via automated Power BI deployment pipelines integrated with Git or Azure DevOps version-controlled repositories.
The State of Florida strictly evaluates and verifies all named staff experience for this contract. Generic resumes that only list generalized technical charts or vague summaries will be automatically rejected.
To be considered for this role, your resume must explicitly detail the following metadata for your past contract positions:
- The Government Customer: Explicitly name the agency and reporting environment context (e.g., Department of Veterans Affairs, Health and Human Services).
- Report Scale & Complexity: Specify the exact size of the user base, the volume of underlying data streams integrated, and the precise project duration.
- Personal Engineering Contribution: Detail exactly what you personally coded or configured (e.g., "Engineered advanced DAX row-level security models," "Optimized semantic data models to resolve query latency bottlenecks").
- System Status: Explicitly state the true production, operational, or steady-state status of the dashboards you deployed.
- Quantifiable Delivery Results: Include the precise performance and quality metrics achieved, such as maintaining dashboard page loads under 5 seconds, query response times, or percentage numbers for data validation completeness.

Tips for Your Remote Power BI Job Search
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote power bi openings from across the U.S. in one place, so you can find roles that match your skills and apply directly without sorting through unrelated listings. Remote roles often close faster than in-office ones, so applying promptly matters.
Publish a remote-ready report portfolio
Host two or three Power BI reports on GitHub or a personal site with a short written summary explaining your data model, DAX logic, and design choices. Remote hiring managers read your documentation as a proxy for how you'll communicate async on the job.
Demonstrate async communication in your application
Remote power bi teams run on written updates, Loom walkthroughs, and Slack threads instead of desk drop-bys. Your cover letter or intro email should mirror that style: clear, structured, and self-contained, so employers can picture you working without a manager in the same room.
Filter openings by required Power Platform tools
Remote roles vary widely between teams that want pure Power BI report builders and those that need Power Automate or Power Apps integration. Narrow your search to roles that list the exact tools you know well so you can speak confidently in a remote screening call.
Remote Power BI Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote power bi job?
Target companies with distributed data teams, since those employers already expect power bi work to happen asynchronously and independently. Remote hiring managers screen for DAX and Power Query proficiency, clean data modeling habits, and written communication skills that replace the whiteboard conversation. A portfolio of published reports with a short written walkthrough of your design decisions signals that you can work without hand-holding, which is the single biggest differentiator in remote screening.
Which companies hire remote power bis?
Employers currently hiring remote power bis include Confiz, Mindex, and Legence, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Remote power bi roles most commonly appear at remote-first technology companies, distributed financial services firms, and healthcare analytics teams that operate across multiple time zones.
Can you get a remote power bi job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level roles are harder to land than in-office ones because you have to demonstrate self-direction from day one without a manager nearby. Companies that hire entry-level power bis remotely tend to be SaaS startups or analytics consultancies with structured onboarding. You can substitute experience with a portfolio of self-built reports on public datasets, a GitHub repo showing your data model documentation, and any coursework or certifications in the Microsoft Power Platform.
Do you need a degree for remote power bi jobs?
Not always. Remote employers hiring power bi professionals weigh demonstrated reporting skills, a portfolio of real dashboards, and familiarity with DAX, Power Query, and data modeling far more heavily than a diploma. A degree in a quantitative field helps at larger firms with formal HR filters, but many remote-first companies and consulting teams hire based on what you can build and document.
Which industries hire the most remote power bis?
Remote power bi roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Law & Legal Services, and Healthcare & Medical Services, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Those sectors hire power bis remotely because their analytics teams are distributed across multiple locations and need reporting infrastructure that functions independently of any central office.
