Research And Development Engineer Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research and development engineer in Maine?
Most research and development engineer positions in Maine require a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline recognized by ABET, such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, or biomedical engineering. Maine does not require a state license specifically for R&D work, but engineers who sign off on public-facing designs may need a Professional Engineer license through the Maine State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Defense contractors near Bath and Brunswick additionally require candidates to be eligible for a federal security clearance.
Which companies hire research and development engineers in Maine?
Companies currently hiring research and development engineers in Maine include University of Maine, MaineHealth, and The Jackson Laboratory, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's defense shipbuilding corridor and its growing biomedical device sector make it one of the more active R&D hiring markets in New England outside of Massachusetts.
Which Maine cities have the most research and development engineer jobs?
Orono, Bar Harbor, and Scarborough account for the largest share of research and development engineer openings in Maine. Portland drives volume through its biomedical and clean-technology startup base, while Bangor and the mid-coast corridor around Bath and Brunswick reflect the deep presence of defense and shipbuilding employers like Bath Iron Works that generate sustained R&D headcount well beyond the immediate metro.
Are there remote research and development engineer jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. R&D engineering work is heavily lab- and prototype-driven, which limits fully remote arrangements compared to purely analytical roles. About 50% of research and development engineer openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to be software-defined systems or data-analysis roles rather than hands-on hardware or materials positions.
How can I get hired as a research and development engineer in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a co-op or internship converted to a full-time role, a pipeline that General Dynamics Bath Iron Works and Idexx Laboratories run regularly for University of Maine and Maine Maritime Academy graduates. Candidates without direct R&D experience can move laterally from quality assurance, manufacturing engineering, or technical support roles, all of which appear frequently in Maine listings. Building a portfolio of senior capstone projects or independent prototypes and pursuing an EIT credential through the Maine State Board of Licensure strengthens any entry-level application.
Where can I find and apply to research and development engineer jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to research and development engineer jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maine openings across defense, biomedical, and advanced manufacturing employers. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly.
