Senior Researcher Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior researcher in Maine?
Most senior researcher roles in Maine require a doctoral degree in a relevant field such as biology, epidemiology, environmental science, or social policy, followed by several years of postdoctoral or applied research experience. Maine does not issue a general state research license, but researchers working in clinical settings may need Maine professional licensure through the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. Demonstrating a sustained record of funded projects and peer-reviewed work is the standard hiring threshold.
Which companies hire senior researchers in Maine?
Employers hiring senior researchers in Maine right now include University of Maine, MaineHealth, and The Jackson Laboratory, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's deep concentration of biomedical institutions, land-grant university programs, and environmental science organizations means openings appear consistently across both nonprofit research centers and larger health systems.
Which Maine cities have the most senior researcher jobs?
The cities with the most senior researcher openings in Maine are Orono, Bar Harbor, and Scarborough. Portland drives volume through its concentration of MaineHealth-affiliated hospitals and biotechnology organizations, while Bangor benefits from large health system and university research activity, and Augusta anchors state government and public health research positions at the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 44% of senior researcher openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the role can be performed off-site. Lab-based, clinical, and field science positions remain largely on-site, while computational and social science roles offer the most location flexibility.
How can I get hired as a senior researcher in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a postdoctoral fellowship or research associate position at a Maine institution such as Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, the University of Maine, or MaineHealth Institute for Research. These organizations regularly recruit early-career scientists into structured programs that build toward senior-level roles. Moving laterally from a research coordinator, data analyst, or laboratory technician position is also common, especially when paired with a relevant graduate degree or progress toward one.
