Senior Researcher Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior researcher in Massachusetts?
Most senior researcher roles in Massachusetts require at least a master's degree, and the majority of positions at major institutions expect a PhD in a relevant field. Massachusetts does not issue a state license specifically for researchers, but clinical researchers working with human subjects must complete IRB certification, and those in regulated biomedical fields often need Good Clinical Practice training. Building a publication record and gaining experience at a Boston or Cambridge research institution, hospital system, or biotech company is the standard path to senior-level standing.
Which companies hire senior researchers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring senior researchers in Massachusetts right now include Beth Israel Lahey Health, Lila Sciences, and Massachusetts General Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Massachusetts's concentration of academic medical centers, biotech firms, and policy research organizations means hiring is spread across a wide range of institution types, from large hospital networks to early-stage life sciences companies along the Route 128 corridor.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most senior researcher jobs?
Boston, Cambridge, and Medford have the most senior researcher openings in Massachusetts. Boston and Cambridge dominate because of the density of academic medical centers, universities, and biotech headquarters in the greater metro area, while Worcester draws openings from UMass Chan Medical School and its affiliated research programs, making it a meaningful secondary hub outside the immediate Boston core.
Are there remote senior researcher jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, though they are more selective than in fully desk-based fields. About 48% of senior researcher openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the mix of lab-based and analytical roles in the state. Positions focused on data analysis, literature synthesis, health policy, or computational modeling are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements, while wet-lab and clinical research roles typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a senior researcher in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a postdoctoral fellowship or a research coordinator role at a Boston-area academic medical center or university, such as those affiliated with Harvard, MIT, or Boston University. Large employers like Mass General Brigham and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute run structured entry-level research programs that provide mentorship and a path toward independent project leadership. Candidates who have completed a relevant graduate thesis, contributed to published work, or earned IRB certification have a concrete edge when competing for these positions.
Where can I find and apply to senior researcher jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to senior researcher jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
