The primary purpose of the Research Associate II is to be responsible for the conduct of highly specialized and technical research on the topic of exploiting metabolic vulnerabilities in cancer. The Valvezan Laboratory studies how metabolic networks are coordinated to promote cell growth, and how to leverage that understanding to exploit metabolic dependencies in cancer. We discovered a targetable metabolic vulnerability that is induced downstream of mTORC1 in cancer, and can be exploited using clinically approved therapeutics to selectively kill cancer cells that have uncontrolled mTORC1 activation. Research Associate II will work to determine the full translational potential of this potent vulnerability in human cancers. The Research Associate II will work at the interface of basic and translational science, combining genetic, pharmacological and molecular biology/biochemistry approaches with the latest metabolomics, metabolic flux analysis, and expression profiling assays in cultured cells and mouse tumor models to gain a comprehensive understanding of how signaling pathways remodel cellular metabolism and how to leverage these insights for therapeutic benefit.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Performs various research and technical operations on the topic of exploiting metabolic vulnerabilities in cancer. Conducts research independently or as assigned specialized research for a particular project.
- Participates in the design and execution of experiments in cultured cells and mice to study signaling and/or metabolism in cell growth and cancer.
- Performs standard cell and molecular biology techniques including PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, western blotting, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemical staining, cell growth and viability assays, flow cytometry.
- Keeps detailed records of procedures and experiments. Compiles data and presents findings.

Mid Level Research Associate Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level research associate job?
Position your experience around ownership and impact, not just task completion. Highlight studies or projects you led from design through analysis, any cross-functional collaboration you drove, and methods you introduced or refined. Employers at this level want evidence that you can work with limited oversight, so tailor your resume and cover letter to show decisions you made, not just duties you performed.
Which companies hire mid level research associates?
Companies hiring mid level research associates right now include JPMorganChase, Google, and Worldwide Clinical Trials, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level covers academic medical centers, pharmaceutical and biotech firms, government contractors, and research-intensive corporations that need associates who can run studies independently.
Are there remote mid level research associate jobs?
Yes, though availability depends on the nature of the research. About 22% of mid level research associate openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with the strongest remote opportunities in data-focused roles such as literature review, survey research, and quantitative analysis. Lab-based and clinical positions typically require on-site presence.
How do I move up to a mid level research associate role?
Getting to mid level means building a body of work that shows increasing responsibility over time. Focus on taking ownership of discrete projects, developing proficiency in a specific methodology or domain, and demonstrating measurable contributions, such as publications, grant support, or process improvements. Seeking out mentorship, volunteering for cross-functional projects, and documenting your independent contributions accelerates the transition from junior to mid level.
Which industries hire the most mid level research associates?
Mid Level research associate roles concentrate in Education, Technology & Software, and Investment & Asset Management, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive hiring at this level because they require ongoing data collection, analysis, and reporting that benefits from associates who can manage workflows and deliver findings without constant direction.
