Research Engineer Jobs in Los Angeles: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a research engineer job in Los Angeles?
Target the sectors driving the most Los Angeles hiring: aerospace and defense contractors clustered in El Segundo and Torrance, biotech and medical device firms in the Westside corridor, and tech research labs near UCLA and USC in Westwood and University Park. Candidates who combine hands-on lab or prototyping experience with a published research record or graduate degree stand out in this market. Networking through university research centers and local IEEE chapter events gives an additional edge.
Which companies hire research engineers in Los Angeles?
Los Angeles research engineer roles are posted by UCLA Health, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and DoorDash and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The local market includes a mix of large defense primes, aerospace OEMs, university-affiliated research institutes, and early-stage deep-tech startups spread from the South Bay to the Westside.
Are there remote research engineer jobs in Los Angeles?
Yes, though it depends heavily on the role. Research engineering work tied to physical prototyping, lab equipment, or hardware testing is almost always on-site, while computational, data-driven, or software-focused research positions are far more remote-friendly. About 27% of research engineer openings tied to Los Angeles are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common at tech research labs and software-adjacent roles in the Westside and Downtown districts.
How can I get a research engineer job in Los Angeles with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Los Angeles is through a university research appointment or co-op at UCLA, USC, or Caltech, which frequently convert to full-time roles at affiliated labs and local employers. Entry-level titles like associate research engineer, research associate, or junior engineer at defense contractors and biotech firms in El Segundo and the Westside are the most common stepping stones. Candidates who bring a master's thesis project, a published paper, or a documented lab contribution move through screening faster than those with coursework alone.
Which industries hire the most research engineers in Los Angeles?
Most research engineer openings in Los Angeles sit in Technology & Software, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Education, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Los Angeles's dense concentration of aerospace and defense primes in the South Bay, alongside a growing biotech cluster on the Westside and deep-tech labs tied to its major research universities, keeps demand for research engineers consistently high across those sectors.
