INTRODUCTION
Mass General Brigham relies on a wide range of professionals, including doctors, nurses, business people, tech experts, researchers, and systems analysts to advance our mission. As a not-for-profit, we support patient care, research, teaching, and community service, striving to provide exceptional care. We believe that high-performing teams drive groundbreaking medical discoveries and invite all applicants to join us and experience what it means to be part of Mass General Brigham.
Job Summary
The salary range for this position is $70,000-$71,750.
The Anahtar Laboratory in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and collaborative postdoctoral research fellow to join our team. Our lab combines machine learning, genomics, and experimental microbiology to address the growing crisis of antimicrobial resistance, with a particular focus on discovering new antibiotic candidates and developing next-generation diagnostics for difficult-to-treat bacterial infections.
The hired candidate will focus on machine learning-guided antibiotic discovery against pathogens of urgent clinical concern. We have developed and deployed deep learning models to identify structurally novel antibacterial hits against bacteria, with a focus on Neisseria gonorrhoeae. We have also applied generative AI approaches to design entirely new antibiotic scaffolds that explore uncharted regions of chemical space. We validate our computational discoveries through rigorous experimental follow-up, including MIC testing across multidrug-resistant clinical isolates, mechanism of action studies, and in vivo mouse infection models.
Our lab sits at the intersection of basic research and clinical translation. Our work is directly informed by the resistant organisms, diagnostic gaps, and treatment failures we encounter clinically. We collaborate closely with engineers, clinicians, biologists, and chemists across MGH, Harvard Medical School, the Broad Institute, and MIT.
Located in Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital is a Harvard Medical School-affiliated academic medical center at the forefront of biomedical research and patient care. We are committed to building an inclusive, diverse, and equitable lab environment.

Tips for Your Research Fellow Job Search
Tailor your CV to fellowship norms
Research fellow applications expect a full academic CV, not a one-page resume. List every publication, conference presentation, grant, and co-investigator credit. Hiring committees weigh research output heavily, so omitting minor contributions leaves your record looking thinner than it is.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists research fellow openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match your discipline and apply directly to each listing without hunting across dozens of institutional job boards.
Match your specialty to the funding source
Many research fellow positions are tied to a specific grant or contract. Read the job post for the funding agency and align your cover letter to that agency's priorities. A fellowship backed by NIH calls for different framing than one funded by a private foundation or a defense contract.
Request feedback after rejection
Fellowship searches are small and relationship-driven. If a search committee declines you, a short, professional follow-up asking for one area to strengthen keeps you visible for future openings and can surface a specific gap, like a missing methodology or publication in a key journal, that you can address.
Prepare a research statement before interviewing
Most research fellow interviews include a request for a five to ten minute overview of your current research agenda and where it leads next. Draft and rehearse this before any interview invitation arrives. Committees assess whether your trajectory fits their lab or center's direction, not just your past output.
Negotiate start date and protected research time
Once you receive an offer, ask explicitly about protected research time and how teaching or service commitments are structured. These terms shape your output more than base compensation does. Fellowship offers often have more flexibility on start dates and workload structure than postings suggest.
Research Fellow Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most research fellows?
The companies hiring the most research fellows right now include Mayo Clinic, Indiana University, and Beth Israel Lahey Health, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Massachusetts, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Openings are distributed across academic medical centers, federal agencies, and independent research institutions.
How many research fellow jobs are remote?
About 5% of research fellow openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though availability varies widely by discipline and institution. Policy research, economics, and computational research roles tend to have the highest share of remote-eligible positions, while lab-based or clinical research fellowships almost always require on-site work.
How do you become a research fellow?
Most research fellow roles require a completed doctoral degree in a relevant field, so the path starts with finishing a PhD or equivalent terminal degree. From there, building a record of peer-reviewed publications, presenting at field conferences, and securing at least one grant or funding credit strengthens your candidacy. Postdoctoral appointments often serve as a direct pipeline into named or institutional fellowship positions.
Can you get a research fellow role with little experience?
Some entry-level or junior research fellow positions are specifically designed for candidates early in their careers, particularly at think tanks, policy institutes, and government research offices that value recent graduate training. A strong dissertation, a working paper under review, or a co-authored publication can substitute for a long publication record. Targeting institutions that explicitly recruit recent PhDs or ABD candidates gives you the most realistic starting point.
What does the research fellow interview process look like?
Research fellow interviews typically begin with a written application review and an initial screening call with a department administrator or HR contact. Candidates who advance usually give a research presentation to the team or committee, followed by one-on-one conversations with senior researchers and sometimes a department head. Final-stage candidates may be asked to submit a writing sample, a research proposal, or references from dissertation advisors or past collaborators.
Where can I find and apply to research fellow jobs?
You can find and apply to research fellow jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from institutions and organizations across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your discipline and experience level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
