Research Associate / Staff Scientist

The Baranov Lab (bnv-lab.org) in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate or Staff Scientist to join our team and support the daily activities of our research laboratory. This position is primarily focused on supporting imaging endeavours, including sample preparation, imaging with fluorescent, confocal and light sheet microscopy and image analysis.

We are a diverse, multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing regenerative ophthalmology and cell transplantation. Our research integrates expertise in stem cell biology, cell therapy, retinal development, retinal cell biology, retinal electrophysiology, transplantation, small and large animal models of disease, and bioinformatics. The laboratory is supported by grants from the Gilbert Family Foundation, U.S. Department of Defense and other.

The University of Pittsburgh, the UPMC Vision Institute, and the Department of Ophthalmology provide an outstanding environment for research and career development. Researchers have access to state-of-the-art facilities for stem cell biology, molecular and cellular research, advanced imaging, and functional studies in animal models, as well as high-performance computing resources for image analysis and bioinformatics. This position requires hands-on work with tissue samples and microsopes, including weekends and holidays.

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a related field.

- Highly motivated, organized, and detail-oriented.

- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

- Willingness to work one weekend day on a regular basis.

- Prior experience in a research laboratory.

- Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and experimental procedures.

- Conduct fluorescence microscopy and image analysis.

- Perform in vitro drug screening and functional assays.

- Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely experimental records and documentation.

- Ensure compliance with institutional biosafety regulations and laboratory safety procedures.

- Assist with general laboratory organization, inventory management, and ordering of supplies as needed.

Pay: $42,342.67 - $59,423.43 per year
