Security Operations Engineer Jobs in Rhode Island: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security operations engineer in Rhode Island?
Most Rhode Island employers expect a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, computer science, or information technology as the foundation. From there, industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker, or CISSP carry significant weight in local hiring decisions. Rhode Island has no state-issued license specific to this role, so candidates build credibility through certifications, hands-on lab experience, and prior work in IT operations or network administration before moving into security engineering positions.
How much do security operations engineers make in Rhode Island?
Security operations engineers in Rhode Island earn a median of about $109,420 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,880 for the lowest 10% to over $170,180 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security operations engineers in Rhode Island?
Employers hiring security operations engineers in Rhode Island right now include FM, Citizens, and CVS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Rhode Island's defense contracting sector and its cluster of financial services and healthcare anchor institutions make it a consistent source of security operations demand across both private and regulated industries.
Which Rhode Island cities have the most security operations engineer jobs?
Johnston, Providence, and Middletown account for the largest concentration of security operations engineer openings in Rhode Island. Providence anchors demand as the state's commercial, healthcare, and government hub, while Cranston and Warwick draw openings from defense contractors and regional financial firms that maintain significant operations in the suburbs south of the capital.
Are there remote security operations engineer jobs in Rhode Island?
Yes, and more than most technical fields. About 44% of security operations engineer openings tied to Rhode Island are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the work, including alert monitoring, threat analysis, and SIEM administration, can be performed from anywhere with secure access. Roles that require on-site presence typically involve classified environments or physical SOC operations.
How can I get hired as a security operations engineer in Rhode Island with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an IT helpdesk, systems administrator, or network analyst role at one of Rhode Island's larger employers, such as a hospital network or a financial institution, and then moving laterally into a junior SOC analyst position. Brown University, Rhode Island College, and New England Tech all offer cybersecurity programs that Rhode Island employers recruit from directly. Earning CompTIA Security+ before applying gives early-career candidates a concrete credential that offsets limited professional experience.
