Job Summary
Provides technical support to schools for the maintenance of network equipment and services to include the repair and support of all district network and telecommunications equipment. This role serves as a frontline technical resource focused on establishing, repairing, and maintaining reliable infrastructure directly within school buildings.
The starting salary is ;$63,127 ;(12 months/260 days)

Responsibilities
Onsite Installation &; Maintenance
- Performs routine physical installation, routine maintenance, and basic repair of district network and telecommunications hardware.
- Services and deploys network switches, Wireless Access Points (WAPs), and routers.
- Mounts, connects, and maintains peripheral infrastructure including school security cameras, localized hotspots, and VoIP phone hardware.
- Supports the basic functionality and physical checks of virtual private networks (VPNs) and backup battery systems.
Troubleshooting &; Ticket Management
- Identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves network hardware, software, and physical layer cabling issues.
- Utilizes standard diagnostic tools¿including copper cable testers, tone generators, probe kits, and basic light meters¿to verify line integrity, locate faults, and map connections. ;
- Monitors the ticketing system daily to claim, update, track, and resolve school work orders efficiently.
- Escalates complex network configurations, routing anomalies, or high-level infrastructure issues to senior departmental engineering staff.
Operational Support
- Actively supports the core educational goals and initiatives of the MPS Strategic Plan.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- An associate's degree or other college-level coursework in information technology or a related field is desired.
- Basic understanding of network design, protocols, and standard concepts including VPN, Routing, Ports, TCP/IP, and network analysis tools.
- Foundational knowledge of standard station cabling systems, including the physical ability to test, terminate, and verify twisted-pair copper (Cat5e/Cat6) infrastructure and perform basic physical-layer checks on fiber optic patching.
- Experience working with or configuring Cisco hardware interfaces is preferred (specifically Layer 2 switches and peripheral devices).
- Experience with other enterprise-grade network equipment may also be considered.
- Computer certifications are highly desired, including CompTIA A+ hardware, CompTIA Network+, and/or Microsoft MCP/MTA certifications.
- Cisco CCNA coursework or related technical field experience is considered a plus.
Conditions of Employment
Work Environment &; Physical Demands
- Work primarily takes place onsite at various district school buildings. Technical tasks are frequently performed inside server closets, localized IT hubs, classrooms, and administrative offices, alongside time spent at the Central Services Building.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently. Must be able to work safely, confidently, and comfortably on a ladder to service elevated equipment such as ceiling-mounted WAPs and security cameras.
- Availability for occasional after-hours support is required to address critical network maintenance or urgent service issues.
Travel Expectations &; Provided Tools
- Frequent travel between various district sites and school campuses is required. Personnel must possess a valid driver¿s license with a good driving history. Employees are required to utilize their personal vehicle for travel between school assignments; mileage expenses will be reimbursed following federal reimbursement guidelines.
- All specialized technical tools¿including standard network analysis software, physical diagnostic devices, specialized cabling equipment, district communication tools, and necessary safety gear¿are provided by Milwaukee Public Schools.
