About the Opportunity
Job Summary
We are hiring a Director of Social Media to drive our global social media strategy. The person in this role is an innovative and creative leader who has the skills and vision to build our brand presence across all platforms with a highly data-informed and analytical approach. The Director of Social Media leads a global team with creators in multiple cities and two countries to develop and execute platform-specific strategies that promote Northeastern by growing audience engagement around various types of content.
Higher education experience is not needed.
The Director of Social Media is a superb content creator and strategist who is on top of the latest trends and understands how to leverage platforms and content to both inform and entertain, while building engaged communities. The person in this role lives and breathes social media, a superb data analyst, and has a track record of meeting ambitious goals.
The Director of Social Media has a track record of leveraging AI-powered tools to develop and execute the most innovative strategies and track progress toward clear goals.
The Director of Social Media is a key member of the External Affairs team, works closely with its senior leaders across the university, and collaborates with colleagues across divisions and locations.
As the leader of a global team, the Director of Social Media must work across time zones and set location-specific strategies that build Northeastern’s brand presence in-market and worldwide.
In addition to creating original and innovative content tailored to each platform, the Director of Social Media coordinates and collaborates on all social-first content creation, including photo and video production, and works with the editorial, photography, video and media relations teams to translate reporting by Northeastern Global News (NGN) to social networks.
A crucial piece of the university’s social media strategy is the 24/7 monitoring and analytics across all relevant platforms, including timely alerts to the appropriate stakeholders, and regular reports capturing critical moments and trends.
The Director of Social Media helps set brand standards and governance guidelines across the global university system and is experienced in social media monitoring for brand management, including the effective use of analytics tools like Sprinklr.
As social media never sleeps, the Director of Social Media must be responsive, fast, thoughtful and creative at a moment's notice regardless of the time of day or day of the week. Crisis and opportunities don't and can't wait. After-hours work, including weekends, holidays and events is routinely required.
The position is based on the Boston campus and is fully in-person.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 4-6 years setting and executing social strategy for brands — listening, analytics, and content creation across formats and platforms.
- Experience leading creator teams across platforms and time zones.
- A sharp, strategic command of data and analytics
- Real experience using AI-powered tools to build and execute standout brand strategy and track it against ambitious goals.
- A proven ability to grow and sustain engagement.
- A track record of setting and hitting measurable goals.
- Writing chops — you understand tone, voice, and the difference one word makes.
- Deep fluency in every major platform, and genuine curiosity about what's next.
- A bias toward using data to make decisions.
- Experience designing and running audience engagement campaigns with measurable results.
- A positive, high-energy attitude.
- Excellent communication skills — up, down, and across the organization.
- A relentless work ethic and obsessive attention to detail.
