Software Design Engineer Jobs in Nebraska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software design engineer in Nebraska?
Most Nebraska software design engineer roles require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Nebraska does not issue a state-specific license for software design engineers, so the path runs through education, a portfolio of project work, and often an internship or co-op with a Nebraska employer. Candidates in defense-adjacent roles at Omaha-area contractors may also need to qualify for a federal security clearance as part of onboarding.
How much do software design engineers make in Nebraska?
Software design engineers in Nebraska earn a median of about $110,900 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,520 for the lowest 10% to over $158,720 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software design engineers in Nebraska?
Nebraska software design engineer roles are posted by Olsson, Valmont Industries, and HDR and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Nebraska's concentration of financial services, insurance, and defense employers means many openings are with large, long-tenured organizations rather than early-stage startups.
Which Nebraska cities have the most software design engineer jobs?
Omaha, Lincoln, and Blair account for the most software design engineer openings in Nebraska. Omaha leads because it is home to major financial services, insurance, and transportation technology employers, while Lincoln draws volume from the University of Nebraska system and state government IT operations, and Bellevue benefits from defense and federal contracting activity tied to Offutt Air Force Base.
Are there remote software design engineer jobs in Nebraska?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 24% of software design engineer openings tied to Nebraska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how naturally the work translates to distributed environments. Roles focused on cloud platform development, backend systems, and enterprise application design tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while embedded systems and hardware-adjacent positions typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a software design engineer in Nebraska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to associate or junior software engineer roles at Nebraska's larger employers, which regularly bring in new graduates. Union Pacific, Sandhills Global, and Nebraska-based insurance firms like Mutual of Omaha run structured new-graduate hiring cycles. A portfolio of personal or academic projects in systems design or full-stack development gives candidates an edge, and adjacent roles in QA engineering or technical support at these same employers are common stepping stones into a dedicated software design engineering position.
Where can I find and apply to software design engineer jobs in Nebraska?
You can find and apply to software design engineer jobs in Nebraska on Migrate Mate, which lists current Nebraska openings. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and preferences, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
