Software Developer Jobs in Nebraska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software developer in Nebraska?
Nebraska does not require a state-issued license or registration to work as a software developer, so the path centers on education and demonstrated skills. Most employers in Omaha and Lincoln hire candidates with a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering from institutions like the University of Nebraska-Lincoln or the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Completing a coding bootcamp, building a portfolio of projects, and earning vendor certifications in cloud or development platforms also strengthens candidates considerably.
How much do software developers make in Nebraska?
Software developers in Nebraska earn a median of about $110,900 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,520 for the lowest 10% to over $158,720 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software developers in Nebraska?
Employers hiring software developers in Nebraska right now include CVS Health, Speechify, and FMNE Insurance Company, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Nebraska's insurance, financial services, and transportation sectors generate consistent demand, with large headquartered employers maintaining dedicated software engineering teams rather than relying solely on outside contractors.
Which Nebraska cities have the most software developer jobs?
Omaha, Lincoln, and Nebraska lead Nebraska for software developer openings. Omaha dominates because of its concentration of insurance carriers, financial institutions, and logistics companies that run large in-house technology operations, while Lincoln benefits from state government technology contracts, the University of Nebraska system, and a growing startup ecosystem that collectively sustain steady developer hiring.
Are there remote software developer jobs in Nebraska?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 79% of software developer openings tied to Nebraska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how portable the work is for developers who write, test, and deploy code without needing to be on-site. Back-end development, cloud engineering, and API integration roles are the most consistently offered as fully remote positions.
How can I get hired as a software developer in Nebraska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly for junior developer or associate software engineer roles at Nebraska's larger technology employers, including Mutual of Omaha, PayPal's Omaha operations, and state government IT divisions, which periodically post new-graduate and entry-level positions. Building a GitHub portfolio with completed projects, completing an internship through the University of Nebraska system, or transitioning laterally from a quality assurance tester or technical support analyst role are the most common doors into a first development job in the state.
Where can I find and apply to software developer jobs in Nebraska?
You can find and apply to software developer jobs in Nebraska on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from Nebraska employers. Search the listings for roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
