Software Developer Jobs in Colorado: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software developer in Colorado?
Colorado does not require a state-issued license to work as a software developer, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skills. Most employers look for a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, though strong portfolios and coding bootcamp credentials are accepted at many Colorado tech companies. Candidates targeting defense or aerospace roles in Colorado Springs or the Denver metro should also be prepared to pursue federal security clearance eligibility from the start of their job search.
How much do software developers make in Colorado?
Software developers in Colorado earn a median of about $138,390 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,480 for the lowest 10% to over $213,010 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software developers in Colorado?
Companies currently hiring software developers in Colorado include Northrop Grumman, Vantor, and BAE Systems USA, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Colorado's mix of aerospace primes, financial technology firms, and fast-growing enterprise software companies means openings exist at organizations of every size and specialization across the Front Range.
Which Colorado cities have the most software developer jobs?
Denver, Colorado Springs, and Aurora lead Colorado for software developer openings. Denver anchors the market as the state's largest tech and financial hub, Boulder draws software talent through its university ecosystem and startup culture, and Colorado Springs generates consistent demand from the dense concentration of defense contractors and military installations in the region.
Are there remote software developer jobs in Colorado?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 62% of software developer openings tied to Colorado are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally the role adapts to distributed work. Roles in web development, cloud engineering, and SaaS product teams tend to be the most consistently remote, while embedded systems and defense-related positions typically require an on-site presence in Colorado.
How can I get hired as a software developer in Colorado with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or junior developer role at a Colorado tech company while completing or shortly after finishing a degree or intensive bootcamp. Large Colorado employers like Lockheed Martin and Trimble run structured new-grad and early-career engineering programs, and Boulder's startup community regularly brings on associate developers willing to grow on the job. Building a GitHub portfolio with Colorado-relevant project work, such as geospatial applications or data pipelines, gives candidates a concrete edge when competing against more experienced applicants.
Where can I find and apply to software developer jobs in Colorado?
