Software Developer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software developer in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license to work as a software developer. Most employers hire candidates who hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, though strong candidates also enter through accredited coding bootcamps or associate degree programs at Texas community colleges. Building a portfolio of projects and earning industry-recognized certifications in cloud platforms or specific programming languages strengthens your candidacy considerably in the Texas market.
How much do software developers make in Texas?
Software developers in Texas earn a median of about $132,150 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,600 for the lowest 10% to over $183,680 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software developers in Texas?
Employers hiring software developers in Texas right now include Apple, Photon, and NVIDIA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's mix of technology headquarters, defense contractors, and large energy companies means software developer hiring stays active across a wide range of industries throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most software developer jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Irving have the most software developer openings in Texas. Austin's concentration of technology company headquarters and the University of Texas talent pipeline drives the highest volume, while Dallas benefits from a large financial services and telecommunications presence anchored by companies like AT&T and JPMorgan Chase, and Houston's energy and aerospace sectors generate steady demand for developers working on industrial and enterprise systems.
Are there remote software developer jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 17% of software developer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well this work translates to distributed teams. Backend development, cloud engineering, and software architecture roles tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while positions involving on-site hardware integration or classified defense contracts typically require in-person work.
How can I get hired as a software developer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior developer role secured through a Texas employer's new-grad hiring program. Large Texas technology employers and defense contractors like Lockheed Martin and Texas Instruments run structured early-career programs for candidates coming directly from university or intensive training. QA analyst, IT support, and technical writing roles at Texas-based companies also serve as common lateral entry points, and a portfolio of personal or open-source projects on GitHub gives hiring managers concrete evidence of your skills when experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to software developer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to software developer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly to the ones that interest you.
