Most employers in New York look for a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline, though candidates with associate degrees, coding bootcamp credentials, or strong portfolio projects also move through hiring pipelines at major New York tech and finance firms. Building a demonstrable body of work through open-source contributions or personal projects is a recognized edge.
How much do software developers make in New York?
Software developers in New York earn a median of about $166,180 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $97,430 for the lowest 10% to over $224,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software developers in New York?
Employers hiring software developers in New York right now include Bloomberg, Rippling, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York City's concentration of financial institutions, media companies, and enterprise technology firms means software developer demand here is unusually broad and sustained across multiple industries.
Which New York cities have the most software developer jobs?
New York, New York, and New York City have the most software developer openings in New York. New York City drives the overwhelming share of listings, anchored by the fintech sector, major media organizations, and the dense cluster of enterprise technology offices in Midtown and Lower Manhattan, while Albany and Buffalo contribute openings tied to state government IT modernization projects and regional healthcare and manufacturing employers.
