Mid Level Software Development Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level software development manager job?
Position your experience around ownership, not just contribution. Highlight projects where you led delivery, resolved blockers independently, and shaped technical direction. Recruiters at this level want to see that you can manage scope and people simultaneously. In your application, emphasize decisions you made, outcomes you drove, and any mentorship you provided to more junior engineers or direct reports.
Which companies hire mid level software development managers?
Companies hiring mid level software development managers right now include Amazon, CVS Health, and Amazon Web Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a wide mix of employers, including established technology firms, high-growth startups scaling their engineering organizations, and large enterprises modernizing their software delivery practices.
Are there remote mid level software development manager jobs?
Yes, and the share is meaningful. About 15% of mid level software development manager openings are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly distributed engineering teams have become. Many organizations managing multi-timezone or multi-office teams actively prefer managers who are experienced working asynchronously and coordinating across locations.
How do I move up to a mid level software development manager role?
The path from entry level to mid level is built on demonstrable ownership over time. Engineers and early managers grow into this tier by taking on full project cycles, developing a consistent record of unblocking teams, and earning responsibility for junior colleagues. Deepening a technical specialty alongside people management fundamentals, such as giving structured feedback and running effective delivery processes, signals readiness for mid level scope.
