Software Development Manager Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a software development manager job in Houston?
Focus your search on Houston's energy tech, healthcare IT, and aerospace software sectors, where engineering-driven companies regularly hire software development managers to lead product and platform teams. The Energy Corridor and Greenway Plaza districts have the densest concentration of these roles. Candidates who combine hands-on engineering background with experience managing distributed or cross-functional teams tend to stand out in Houston's market.
Which companies hire software development managers in Houston?
Houston software development manager roles are posted by Fluor, Quanta Services, and Ardurra and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's hiring market draws from a mix of large energy conglomerates with dedicated tech divisions, regional health systems, and a growing base of software-first startups and defense contractors.
Are there remote software development manager jobs in Houston?
Yes, though remote availability varies since software development managers often need to coordinate on-site with engineering teams. About 14% of software development manager openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements being most common. Strategic and planning-heavy responsibilities tend to transfer to remote formats most readily, while sprint ceremonies and team onboarding typically remain in-person.
How can I get a software development manager job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is moving from a senior software engineer or technical lead role into a first-time manager position at a mid-size energy tech or healthcare IT company, where internal promotions are common. Houston employers in those sectors frequently hire engineers willing to take on people management responsibilities before holding a formal manager title. Building a record of mentoring junior developers and leading delivery on a full project cycle strengthens a candidate's case considerably.
Which industries hire the most software development managers in Houston?
Most software development manager openings in Houston sit in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's role as a global hub for energy and a major center for medical research drives sustained demand for engineering leadership across both legacy enterprise systems and newer cloud and data platforms.
