DESCRIPTION
Build the AI-powered bidding controls and recommendation systems that help millions of advertisers optimize their campaigns on Amazon — developing agentic architectures, model fine-tuning infrastructure, and experimentation platforms that directly impact how advertisers create, grow, and manage their business. Your technical decisions will translate directly into advertiser success and the products customers discover on Amazon.
The Advertiser Controls team within Sponsored Products and Brands is building three critical platform capabilities. First, AI engineering infrastructure that powers our bidding and recommendation systems — systems for model fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, model inferencing, and preference optimization, with evaluation frameworks that ensure safety, reliability, and trust at scale. Second, agentic architectures that allow AI systems to work together seamlessly — agent-to-agent communication protocols for discovery, negotiation, and task handoff, lifecycle management for agent sessions, and state management that persists context across multi-step workflows. Third, experimentation systems that support multiple concurrent online experiments, accelerating the team's ability to test new bidding strategies and learn from real advertiser behavior. You'll work backwards from advertiser needs — collaborating with product managers, scientists, and engineers to understand business problems and translate them into technical solutions, seeking guidance from senior engineers and principals on complex architectural tradeoffs.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and develop agentic platform components using GenAI/ML technologies to deliver low-latency, secure advertiser experiences
- Build scalable systems that process millions of data points and optimize for cost efficiency through resource utilization, token consumption, and memory management
- Develop conversational AI and natural language interactions for advertiser bidding guidance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI-driven solutions across the advertising ecosystem
- Identify and eliminate root causes of operational issues with permanent fixes; proactively improve team operations, tooling, and processes
- Write high-quality, maintainable code with clear documentation
- Provide meaningful code reviews, mentor engineers, and train new teammates on system architecture and operations

Tips for Your Software Development Manager Job Search
Quantify your team delivery impact
Hiring managers for software development manager roles want to see scope, not just titles. Replace 'led a team' with specifics like release cadence improved, engineers mentored into senior roles, or technical debt reduced across a codebase.
Tailor your resume to the stack
Software development manager job listings vary sharply by environment. A cloud-native scale-up will screen for Kubernetes and CI/CD fluency while an enterprise shop wants SAFe or ITIL experience. Match your resume language to each posting's technical context.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists software development manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings that match your IC depth
Some software development manager roles expect you to stay close to code reviews and architecture decisions, while others are purely people and program leadership. Read the responsibilities section carefully and apply only where your current IC-to-manager balance aligns.
Prepare a system design narrative
Most software development manager interviews include a technical leadership round where you walk through a past system decision. Prepare two or three stories that show how you balanced engineering quality, delivery timelines, and stakeholder pressure in a real project.
Negotiate scope before you negotiate title
In software development manager offers, the team size, reporting structure, and roadmap ownership determine your actual leverage more than the title does. Clarify these in your final round conversations before entering compensation discussions.
Software Development Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most software development managers?
The companies hiring the most software development managers right now include Amazon, CVS Health, and Amazon Web Services, with the largest share of openings in Washington, California, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Demand is concentrated in companies scaling cloud infrastructure and maturing their agile delivery practices.
How many software development manager jobs are remote?
About 63% of software development manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, making it one of the more flexible roles in engineering leadership. Sub-areas like platform engineering management and distributed systems leadership tend to have the highest remote availability, while roles requiring regular on-site collaboration with hardware or compliance teams skew more on-site.
How do you become a software development manager?
Most software development managers move into the role after several years as a senior or staff engineer, then take on informal leadership responsibilities such as mentoring, running standups, or owning a delivery workstream. From there, the path typically involves a formal promotion into a team lead or engineering manager role, building skills in performance management, roadmap planning, and stakeholder communication alongside ongoing technical credibility.
Can you get hired as a software development manager without prior management experience?
It is possible, particularly at smaller companies or startups where engineering teams are growing and formal management structure is new. Candidates who have led project delivery, mentored junior engineers, or served as a technical lead on cross-functional work can demonstrate readiness for the role even without a direct management title. Framing those experiences clearly in your resume and interviews is the key differentiator.
What does the software development manager interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a recruiter screen focused on team size and leadership philosophy, followed by a hiring manager conversation about your engineering background and management approach. Later rounds usually include a technical leadership or system design discussion, a behavioral panel with engineering peers or product managers, and sometimes a presentation or case study on how you would handle a delivery or people challenge specific to their environment.
Where can I find and apply to software development manager jobs?
You can find and apply to software development manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each one that fits.
