Job Description

Title: Scientific Product Owner

Location: Cambridge, MA

About the role:

As the Scientific Product Owner, you will define, deliver, and continuously improve digital products supporting Takeda’s Nonclinical Safety and Pharmacology functions, Drug Discovery Units (DDUs), and Plasma-Derived Therapies (PDT) R&D. You will support pathology, in vivo research, comparative medicine, nonclinical regulatory writing, safety and toxicology, pharmacology, discovery research, and PDT R&D activities. You will also serve as the specialized owner for the Research Control Tower, providing an integrated view of research portfolios, studies, milestones, risks, dependencies, decisions, data, and regulatory deliverables. You will also be working across global scientific, business, data, technology, quality, and regulatory stakeholders, the role will translate research needs into product strategies, roadmaps, capabilities, and prioritized backlogs. You will enable improved scientific decision-making, operational transparency, data accessibility, collaboration, compliance, and execution across Takeda’s research ecosystem.

How will you contribute:

Product Strategy and Vision

• Define and communicate the product vision, strategy, objectives, and roadmap for digital products serving Nonclinical Safety, Pharmacology, DDUs, and PDT R&D.
• Establish the strategy for the Research Control Tower as an integrated source of insight across research portfolios, studies, programs, milestones, risks, decisions, and deliverables.
• Align product priorities with R&D strategy, DDU and PDT portfolio needs, scientific objectives, technology architecture, data governance, quality requirements, and regulatory expectations.
• Identify opportunities to simplify processes, improve transparency, increase data reuse, and accelerate research decisions.

Scientific Function Enablement

• Partner with leaders and subject-matter experts across Nonclinical Safety, Pharmacology, DDUs, and PDT R&D to understand workflows, data requirements, and unmet needs.
• Translate scientific processes and user needs into clear product requirements and measurable outcomes.
• Support integration of study data, pathology findings, toxicology results, pharmacology observations, PDT research information, regulatory content, and program milestones.
• Improve traceability from research planning and execution through interpretation, reporting, governance, and regulatory support.
• Enable consistent global processes while accommodating valid differences across scientific functions, programs, sites, and regions.

Research Control Tower Product Ownership

• Own the Research Control Tower product vision, roadmap, backlog, release planning, and lifecycle management.
• Establish capabilities for:
• Research and portfolio visibility
• Study and program tracking
• Milestone and deliverable management
• Risk, issue, and dependency monitoring
• Decision logging
• Governance and status reporting
• PDT and DDU portfolio oversight
• Define dashboards and user experiences for scientists, study directors, program teams, research leaders, governance forums, and senior leadership.
• Establish metrics for research progress, study execution, resource utilization, turnaround time, quality, risks, dependencies, and delivery confidence.
• Promote interoperability with research, laboratory, document, data, analytics, regulatory, and portfolio systems.
• Ensure the product provides trusted, governed, and actionable information for research oversight.
• Enable faster, higher-quality decisions across Nonclinical Safety, Pharmacology, DDUs, and PDT R&D.
• Provide a unified view of research plans, studies, programs, milestones, results, risks, dependencies, decisions, and regulatory deliverables.
• Improve collaboration across scientific functions and research organizations.
• Reduce manual reporting, duplicate data entry, fragmented information, and process variation.
• Strengthen traceability, data quality, reuse, and inspection readiness.
• Deliver scalable digital capabilities that support both small molecule/biologic discovery and PDT R&D.
• Apply analytics, automation, AI/ML, and GenAI responsibly to scientific and operational challenges.
• Maintain a user-centered, scientifically credible, secure, governed, compliant, and sustainable product ecosystem.

Product Delivery and Agile Execution

• Lead discovery, user research, design thinking, requirements gathering, prioritization, and iterative delivery.
• Maintain and prioritize the product backlog based on scientific value, business impact, user needs, risk, compliance, and technical feasibility.
• Develop epics, features, user stories, acceptance criteria, and outcome measures.
• Collaborate with engineering, architecture, data, analytics, UX, quality, validation, and vendor teams.
• Plan and oversee pilots, minimum viable products, releases, adoption activities, and continuous improvements.
• Manage product lifecycle activities from concept through implementation, sustainment, optimization, and retirement.

Data, Technology, and Compliance

• Define requirements for data integration, metadata, data quality, lineage, access, interoperability, and reporting.
• Partner with data and technology teams to develop scalable cloud, analytics, AI/ML, and GenAI capabilities where appropriate.
• Address GxP and Non-GxP requirements, data integrity, privacy, cybersecurity, validation, auditability, and records management.
• Collaborate with Quality, Regulatory, Legal, Privacy, and Information Security stakeholders.
• Establish appropriate controls for governed data, role-based access, controlled terminology, and product documentation.
• Support standards for nonclinical, pharmacology, DDU, and PDT research data.

Stakeholder Leadership and Change Management

• 
  Build trusted relationships with global scientific, DDU, PDT, business, data, and technology stakeholders.
• Facilitate alignment among scientists, study directors, toxicologists, pathologists, pharmacologists, regulatory writers, DDU teams, PDT R&D teams, research operations, and IT.
• Communicate product progress, risks, decisions, value, and outcomes to governance forums and senior leaders.
• Lead change management, training, communications, and adoption activities.
• Represent the product in portfolio, architecture, data governance, quality, and technology planning forums.
• Influence without direct authority across functions, regions, and cultures.

What you bring to Takeda:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in biology, pharmacology, toxicology, pathology, veterinary medicine, life sciences, computer science, information systems, business, or related discipline.
• 6 or more years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, life sciences, research technology, scientific operations, product management, or digital transformation.
• Experience supporting one or more of the following: nonclinical safety, pharmacology, pathology, toxicology, in vivo re-search, comparative medicine, discovery research, DDUs, or PDT R&D.
• Demonstrated experience managing digital products through strategy, discovery, delivery, adoption, and continuous improvement.
• Experience with agile product development, roadmaps, backlog management, and release planning.
• Strong ability to translate scientific and business needs into product requirements.
• Excellent communication, facilitation, negotiation, and stakeholder-management skills.
• Experience working with global, cross-functional, and virtual teams.
• Understanding of data governance, data quality, security, privacy, and regulated environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree, doctoral degree, DVM, or equivalent advanced qualification in a relevant scientific discipline.
• Experience with nonclinical regulatory submissions, regulatory writing, pathology data, toxicology systems, laboratory sys-tems, research data platforms, or control tower solutions.
• Experience supporting Drug Discovery Units or Plasma-Derived Therapies R&D.
• Experience delivering dashboards, data products, analytics, AI/ML, or GenAI solutions.
• Experience with AWS or comparable cloud platforms, data lakes, APIs, and enterprise integration.
• Experience with GxP and Non-GxP product development, validation, inspection readiness, and quality systems.
• Product management, agile, or design-thinking certification.

U.S. Base Salary Range:

$137,000.00 - $215,270.00

The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.
