Applications Developer Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a applications developer in Massachusetts?
Most applications developer roles in Massachusetts require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or information systems, though some employers accept equivalent experience or an associate degree paired with a strong portfolio. Massachusetts has no state-issued license for applications developers. Candidates typically build their path through degree programs at schools like UMass Amherst or Northeastern, followed by internships or co-ops with Boston-area employers, then apply to entry or junior developer positions directly.
How much do applications developers make in Massachusetts?
Applications developers in Massachusetts earn a median of about $165,210 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $102,810 for the lowest 10% to over $213,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire applications developers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring applications developers in Massachusetts right now include InterSystems, RxAdvance, and Boston College, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Massachusetts's concentration of financial services firms, academic medical centers, and defense contractors means demand is distributed across multiple large, stable industries rather than relying on any single sector.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most applications developer jobs?
Boston, Burlington, and Southborough account for the most applications developer openings in Massachusetts. Boston and Cambridge anchor the market through their dense clusters of financial institutions, biotechnology firms, and teaching hospitals, while the Route 128 corridor towns draw significant volume from established defense and enterprise software employers headquartered in suburban office parks.
Are there remote applications developer jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 25% of applications developer openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how well the work translates to distributed teams. Roles focused on back-end integration, enterprise system maintenance, and internal tooling tend to offer the most flexibility, while positions requiring close coordination with on-site infrastructure teams are more likely to require in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a applications developer in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a co-op or internship at a Boston-area employer, since companies like Fidelity Investments and large academic medical centers run structured programs specifically for students and recent graduates. Candidates without direct experience often move in from adjacent roles such as business analyst, QA tester, or IT support. A portfolio of personal or academic projects hosted on a public repository, combined with a relevant degree or a recognized certification in a platform like AWS or Salesforce, gives applicants a concrete edge in Massachusetts's competitive entry-level market.
Where can I find and apply to applications developer jobs in Massachusetts?
