STEM OPT Database Developer Jobs
Database Developer roles qualify for STEM OPT because they map to CIP codes in computer science and information technology. Your STEM degree gives you up to 24 months of additional work authorization beyond your initial OPT period, but only with employers enrolled in E-Verify. That requirement filters the job market before you apply.

Confirm your CIP code matches database roles
Pull up your degree's CIP code through your DSO before applying. Computer science, information systems, and data science codes all support Database Developer roles, but some general business or management information systems degrees sit in gray areas that require DSO confirmation.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before every application
Check E-Verify's employer search tool directly before submitting any application. A company can lose E-Verify enrollment between job postings and offer letters, so confirm status at application, not just at hire. Unenrolled employers cannot legally employ you on STEM OPT.
Target employers with active DOL LCA filings for database roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with Labor Condition Application history in database and software development occupations. Employers already familiar with LCA filing understand STEM OPT timelines and are less likely to rescind offers over authorization questions.
Build a training plan around your actual database stack
Your I-983 must list specific learning objectives tied to your job duties, not generic descriptions. Document the database systems, query languages, and data modeling tools you'll use. USCIS scrutinizes vague training plans, and a role-specific plan is harder to challenge.
Time your STEM OPT application against your offer timeline
USCIS recommends filing your STEM OPT extension at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Database Developer hiring cycles often run four to eight weeks, so start identifying employers six months out to leave room for offer negotiation and filing preparation.
Use SOC codes to benchmark prevailing wage expectations
Database Developers fall under SOC code 15-1252. Run that code through the OFLC Wage Search to see what employers must certify on an LCA for your metro area. If an offer falls below the Level I prevailing wage, the employer faces a compliance problem at the LCA stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Database Developer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Database Developer positions qualify when your degree is in a STEM field with a matching CIP code, such as computer science, information systems, or data science. The role itself must require application of your STEM knowledge, not just use software incidentally. Your DSO confirms eligibility based on your specific degree program and the job description your employer provides.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for a Database Developer?
Your I-983 must list measurable learning objectives tied directly to database development work, including the specific technologies, languages, and systems you'll work with. Objectives like 'design normalized relational schemas using PostgreSQL' are enforceable and verifiable. USCIS looks for a clear connection between your STEM degree, your listed objectives, and the actual duties in your offer letter. Generic descriptions increase the risk of a request for evidence.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify before accepting an offer?
Use E-Verify's free public employer search tool to look up any company by name or employer identification number before you sign an offer. Enrollment status can change, so search at the time of the offer, not when the job was posted. An employer that isn't enrolled cannot legally hire you on STEM OPT, and you'd need to find a new employer or convert to a different status before starting work.
What happens to my STEM OPT if my employer loses E-Verify enrollment after I start?
If your employer's E-Verify enrollment lapses after you begin working, you must stop working for that employer. USCIS requires continuous E-Verify enrollment throughout your entire STEM OPT period. Your employer is responsible for re-enrolling, but the legal obligation to maintain authorized employment is yours. Report the change to your DSO immediately and document your response in case USCIS reviews your record.
Where can I find Database Developer jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters Database Developer listings for employers with active E-Verify enrollment and LCA filing history in technology occupations, which removes the back-and-forth of explaining your authorization to employers unfamiliar with STEM OPT. Searching on Migrate Mate narrows your pool to employers who have already navigated the compliance side of hiring international students in technical roles.
