Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Electrical Engineering Intern
Confirm your CIP code before applying
Your school's DSO assigns a CIP code to your degree that determines STEM OPT eligibility. Cross-check it against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before you apply, because a mismatched code disqualifies your extension even if your coursework is technical.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
An employer offering you an internship must be enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension starts. Check enrollment status directly through the E-Verify employer search tool so you don't accept a role that invalidates your extension.
Target firms with active EE intern LCA filings
Companies that file Labor Condition Applications for electrical engineering intern roles are already familiar with OPT work authorization requirements. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified LCA filing history in your target engineering specialty before you apply.
Build your I-983 training plan before your start date
Your employer must sign a Form I-983 training plan that maps specific electrical engineering tasks to your degree's learning objectives. Draft it in advance with your supervisor covering circuit design, testing protocols, or embedded systems work so your DSO can authorize the extension quickly.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your intern offer
The DOL requires your compensation to meet prevailing wage standards for electrical engineering interns in your metro area. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 17-2071 before negotiating so you know the floor your employer must meet to remain compliant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my electrical engineering degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension?
Most electrical engineering, computer engineering, and related degrees qualify if your school assigned a CIP code that appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Your DSO can confirm your specific code. Degrees in adjacent fields like applied physics or mechatronics may also qualify depending on the assigned CIP code, so verify with your DSO before assuming you're ineligible.
Is an Electrical Engineering Intern position considered directly related to my STEM degree?
Yes, provided the internship involves work that draws on your electrical engineering coursework, such as circuit analysis, PCB design, signal processing, power systems, or embedded systems development. USCIS requires a clear connection between your job duties and your degree field, which is documented in your Form I-983 training plan that your employer signs before your extension begins.
What happens to my work authorization if my employer isn't enrolled in E-Verify?
You cannot work for that employer on a STEM OPT extension if they aren't enrolled in E-Verify. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement, not a formality. If an employer hires you and later fails to complete enrollment, your STEM OPT extension is at risk. Always confirm enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search before signing an offer letter for an internship.
What does the I-983 training plan need to cover for an electrical engineering internship?
The I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your degree, the engineering tasks you'll perform, how your supervisor will train and evaluate you, and confirmation that your compensation meets DOL wage requirements. For electrical engineering interns, this typically covers design, testing, simulation, or prototyping work. Your DSO must authorize the plan before your extension is approved by USCIS.
How do I find electrical engineering internships that are open to STEM OPT students?
Search Migrate Mate, which filters listings for employers with E-Verify enrollment and verified LCA filing history in engineering roles. Many employers don't advertise OPT authorization explicitly, so filtering by verified compliance history saves time. You can also use O*NET to identify the correct SOC code for electrical engineering intern roles and target employers with matching LCA filings through DOL disclosure data.
