Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the STEM OPT designated degree list before you apply anywhere. Degrees in statistics, data science, computer science, and applied mathematics typically qualify, but the exact CIP code on your transcript determines eligibility, not the program name.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask every internship recruiter whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before your first interview. You can cross-check employer status through the E-Verify employer search tool. An offer from a non-enrolled employer means you cannot use your STEM OPT extension, even if the role is a perfect fit.
Build a portfolio around production-ready data pipelines
Data science intern hiring managers at E-Verify-enrolled companies often screen for applied ML or SQL work, not just academic projects. GitHub repositories showing end-to-end pipelines from raw data to model deployment signal the production-environment experience that justifies training plan approval under STEM OPT.
Use Migrate Mate to target STEM OPT-ready employers
Search Migrate Mate for data science internships filtered by employers already set up for STEM OPT work authorization. This cuts time spent on companies that have no infrastructure for E-Verify enrollment or structured training plans, which are both required before your extension activates.
Draft your I-983 training plan before your start date
Your DSO must submit the I-983 to USCIS before you begin working under the STEM OPT extension. Work with your employer's HR team to document specific learning objectives tied to your data science role, including tools, methodologies, and measurable outcomes, so the plan satisfies SEVP requirements on the first submission.
Apply 90 days before your OPT EAD expires
USCIS recommends filing the STEM OPT extension application at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD end date. Filing within that window keeps your work authorization continuous even if USCIS hasn't approved the extension yet, protecting your ability to stay in your internship without a gap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Science Intern role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your underlying degree carries an eligible CIP code in a STEM field such as statistics, computer science, mathematics, or data science, and the internship provides direct training in that field. The role itself must relate to your degree, and your DSO must approve the I-983 training plan before the extension activates. Check your transcript's CIP code against the STEM designated degree list maintained by USCIS to confirm eligibility.
Does my employer need to be in E-Verify for a data science internship on STEM OPT?
Yes, E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for any employer hiring on the STEM OPT extension, including internships. There are no exceptions for startups, research labs, or short-term internship programs. Before signing an offer letter, ask HR to confirm their E-Verify employer ID. If the company isn't enrolled, you cannot use your 24-month extension with them, regardless of role fit. Migrate Mate surfaces employers already set up for STEM OPT hiring.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a data science internship?
The I-983 must describe the specific training objectives tied to your STEM degree, the data science skills and tools you'll develop, the name and title of your on-site supervisor, and how your employer will provide structured oversight. For data science roles this typically includes work with machine learning frameworks, statistical modeling, or data engineering pipelines. Your employer signs the form, and your DSO submits it to USCIS. Vague or generic plans are frequently returned for revision, so detail matters.
What happens to my STEM OPT if my data science internship is converted to a full-time role?
Your STEM OPT extension remains valid as long as the new full-time role still relates to your STEM degree and the employer stays E-Verify enrolled. You'll need to update your I-983 training plan to reflect the change in role scope, hours, and objectives, and your DSO must be notified within five days of the material change. If your employer later files for H-1B visa sponsorship, cap-gap protections can bridge your status through October 1 of the fiscal year following selection.
Can I do a remote data science internship on STEM OPT?
Remote work is permitted under STEM OPT, but the employer must still be E-Verify enrolled, and your I-983 training plan must accurately reflect the remote work arrangement. SEVP requires your employer to provide bona fide supervision and structured training regardless of location. If you relocate to a different state for the remote role, notify your DSO so your SEVIS record reflects the correct address. Some employers list remote data science internships on Migrate Mate with STEM OPT authorization already confirmed.
