Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Product Software Engineer
Confirm your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to an approved STEM field on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Product Software Engineer roles typically require computer science or software engineering credentials, so a mismatch in CIP code can invalidate your extension before it starts.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Search the E-Verify employer search tool to confirm a company is actively enrolled before you sign anything. An employer that isn't enrolled cannot legally employ you on STEM OPT, and retroactive enrollment after your start date doesn't fix the gap.
Align your I-983 training plan to product engineering deliverables
Your I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not generic job duties. For Product Software Engineer roles, map training goals to systems design, architecture decisions, or engineering leadership skills your degree prepared you for, so your DSO can certify the plan without requesting revisions.
Target employers with existing STEM OPT infrastructure
Use Migrate Mate to find Product Software Engineer roles at employers whose E-Verify enrollment is already verified on the platform, cutting the time you'd spend manually cross-checking each company before applying.
Negotiate your start date around cap-gap protection
If you're applying for H-1B visa and your OPT expires before October 1, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through that date. Confirm your exact EAD expiration with your DSO before locking in a start date, since a miscalculated gap can interrupt employment without warning.
Check prevailing wage before evaluating offers
Run your target title and location through OFLC Wage Search to see the prevailing wage levels for Product Software Engineer roles in that metro. Employers sponsoring future H-1B status must certify an LCA at or above the prevailing wage, so a below-market offer can signal problems down the line.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Software Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an approved STEM field such as computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. The role itself must also provide practical training directly related to that degree. Your DSO reviews both the degree CIP code and the training plan on your I-983 before recommending the extension to USCIS.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my STEM OPT employer?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension begins. Enrollment cannot happen after your start date to retroactively cover you. You can confirm a company's enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool before accepting an offer. Working for a non-enrolled employer on STEM OPT violates your status even if the employer later enrolls.
What should my I-983 training plan include for a Product Software Engineer position?
Your I-983 must connect specific job duties to learning goals tied to your STEM degree. For a Product Software Engineer role, this means documenting how tasks like systems architecture, product roadmap execution, or cross-functional technical leadership build on your academic preparation. Generic job descriptions aren't sufficient. Your employer supervisor and DSO both sign the plan, and USCIS can request it during an audit.
How does cap-gap work if my OPT expires before October 1 during an H-1B year?
Cap-gap automatically extends your OPT work authorization and status through September 30 if your H-1B petition is filed before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery. You can continue working as a Product Software Engineer during that window without an updated EAD. Your DSO can issue a cap-gap I-20 to document the extension for your employer's records.
Where can I find Product Software Engineer jobs that accept STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 students on OPT and STEM OPT, with Product Software Engineer listings filtered to show employers whose E-Verify enrollment is verified. That means you're not spending time applying to companies that can't legally hire you on a STEM OPT extension, and you can focus your effort on roles where authorization is already confirmed.
