Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Facilities Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before targeting roles. Mechanical, civil, industrial, and systems engineering degrees qualify, but facilities-adjacent fields like construction management often don't.
Filter employers by E-Verify enrollment status
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before investing time in any application. Use Migrate Mate to filter Facilities Engineer postings to employers already verified as E-Verify participants, so you're not discovering the gap at the offer stage.
Target employers with active facilities operations
Facilities Engineer roles exist across manufacturing, healthcare, data centers, and higher education. Companies with owned real estate portfolios or multi-site operations file more consistently for STEM OPT students than project-based contractors who staff up and down.
Draft your I-983 training plan around specific technical objectives
Your I-983 must connect your STEM degree to the role's engineering tasks. Map objectives to systems like HVAC commissioning, energy management software, or preventive maintenance programs. Vague plans tied only to job duties get pushed back by DSOs.
Ask about E-Verify status before the offer stage
Bring up E-Verify enrollment during the final interview or before accepting an offer. Many facilities departments within large organizations are enrolled, but staffing agencies placed in facilities roles often are not. USCIS requires enrollment at the time of your OPT extension start date.
Use OFLC Wage Search to negotiate informed offers
Pull prevailing wage data for your SOC code and metro area from the OFLC Wage Search before entering salary discussions. Facilities Engineers have region-specific wage levels, and knowing the DOL benchmark gives you a grounded starting point for any negotiation.

Find Facilities Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Facilities Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on the degree, not the job title. STEM OPT eligibility is tied to your CIP code, not your position. Degrees in mechanical, civil, electrical, industrial, or systems engineering typically qualify. Your employer also needs to be enrolled in E-Verify and co-sign your I-983 training plan with your DSO before USCIS approves the extension.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for a Facilities Engineer?
The I-983 must connect your STEM degree to specific engineering learning objectives in the role. For Facilities Engineers, that means documenting how tasks like building systems analysis, energy audits, or infrastructure project management develop skills from your degree program. Generic descriptions tied only to daily duties won't satisfy DSO review. Your employer's direct supervisor typically co-signs the form.
How do I confirm an employer is enrolled in E-Verify before applying?
You can ask the recruiter or HR contact directly. The E-Verify employer search tool on the E-Verify website lets you look up enrolled employers by name and location. Note that E-Verify enrollment applies to a specific employer entity, so a parent company's enrollment doesn't automatically cover a subsidiary. Confirm the specific hiring entity is enrolled, not just the corporate brand.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my Facilities Engineer role changes significantly?
A material change in job duties, location, or employer requires an updated I-983. You and your employer must notify your DSO within five days of a material change under USCIS rules. If the new duties no longer connect to your STEM degree's learning objectives, your DSO may determine the role no longer supports your extension. Keep your training plan current with your actual work.
Where can I find Facilities Engineer jobs that are confirmed to hire STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers who hire F-1 STEM OPT students and are enrolled in E-Verify, so you're not sorting through postings that won't work for your status. Searching there saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering eligibility issues after an offer is extended.
