Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Field Technician
Confirm your CIP code covers field work
Field Technician roles often sit under engineering technology or environmental science CIP codes. Check your degree's CIP code against USCIS's STEM Designated Degree Program List before applying, so you don't accept an offer and discover your degree is ineligible after the fact.
Verify E-Verify status before every application
Ask hiring managers directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before your first interview. Field Technician employers in utilities and construction often operate as contractors, and not every contracting entity on a job site maintains its own E-Verify enrollment.
Draft your I-983 training plan around field rotations
Field Technician roles frequently involve rotating schedules across multiple sites. Structure your I-983 to name the primary employer location and describe how each rotation ties to your STEM degree goals, since vague training plans are a common reason DSOs delay approval.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark field technician pay
Pull prevailing wage data from the OFLC Wage Search using the Standard Occupational Classification code for your specific field before negotiating an offer. Employers filing an LCA must meet DOL wage requirements, and knowing the threshold protects you from below-rate offers.
Search Migrate Mate to find E-Verify enrolled employers
Filter your Field Technician job search on Migrate Mate to surface employers already enrolled in E-Verify with a documented history of hiring OPT students. This cuts the time you spend vetting employers manually and keeps your search inside your authorization window.
Time your offer acceptance around your OPT end date
If your initial OPT expires while an H-1B petition is pending, cap-gap rules extend your work authorization automatically. Submit your STEM OPT extension application to your DSO at least 90 days before your EAD expires to avoid a gap that forces you off the job site.

Find Field Technician JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Field Technician roles qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
They can, but qualification depends on your degree's CIP code, not the job title itself. Field Technician positions in electrical engineering, environmental science, or network technology typically qualify when your degree appears on USCIS's STEM Designated Degree Program List. Review the O*NET profile for your specific technician role to confirm the degree alignment before applying.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my Field Technician employer?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to sponsor your STEM OPT extension. This applies to the legal entity that signs your offer letter, not the end client or job site owner. In the contracting and utilities sectors, where Field Technicians often work under subcontracting arrangements, confirm E-Verify enrollment with the company that will appear on your I-983, not the site manager.
How do I complete the I-983 training plan for a Field Technician position?
Your I-983 must describe how the Field Technician role directly relates to your STEM degree and identify measurable learning goals tied to that degree field. For field roles with rotating assignments, list the primary work location and explain how each technical task, such as equipment calibration, diagnostic testing, or data collection, advances your STEM training. Your employer supervisor and DSO both sign the form.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my Field Technician employer loses E-Verify status?
If your employer is terminated from E-Verify, your STEM OPT authorization is at risk. You must report a material change in employment to your DSO within five business days. USCIS requires that you either transfer to a new E-Verify enrolled employer or stop working. Finding a replacement employer quickly is critical; Migrate Mate lets you filter Field Technician openings by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment.
Does cap-gap protection apply if I'm a Field Technician on STEM OPT?
Yes, if your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT EAD expires and you are selected in the H-1B lottery, cap-gap rules automatically extend your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as a Field Technician during this period without interruption, as long as your employer maintains E-Verify enrollment throughout.
