Verify your CIP code before applying
Not every computer science or information systems degree carries a STEM-designated CIP code. Check your program's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before targeting roles, so you don't apply for positions your extension can't cover.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT requires your employer to be actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. Ask HR to confirm their E-Verify Company ID number during the offer stage, before you sign, since an unenrolled employer voids your extension eligibility.
Target employers with ITIL or ITSM team structures
Companies running formal ITIL frameworks, ServiceNow environments, or dedicated service desk operations are structurally more likely to hire for STEM OPT roles. Look for job postings that list incident management, change management, or CMDB ownership as core responsibilities.
Build your I-983 training plan around measurable outcomes
Your I-983 must connect your STEM degree to your IT Service Management duties. Frame training goals around specific competencies like SLA analysis, problem management workflows, or ITSM platform administration rather than vague learning objectives that DSOs will flag for revision.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for E-Verify employers in ITSM
Filtering job listings by E-Verify status manually is time-consuming and unreliable. Migrate Mate surfaces IT Service Management roles at employers already verified for STEM OPT eligibility, so you can focus your applications on positions you can actually take.
Plan your cap-gap window around H-1B registration timing
If you intend to transition from STEM OPT to H-1B, your employer must file a timely petition before your EAD expires. USCIS's cap-gap rule extends your work authorization through September 30, but only if the H-1B petition is filed before your current OPT end date.

Find IT Service Management JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Service Management role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
IT Service Management roles can qualify for the STEM OPT extension if two conditions are met: your degree carries a STEM-designated CIP code recognized by DHS, and your job duties connect directly to that field of study. Roles focused on ITIL process governance, ITSM platform administration, or IT operations analytics typically satisfy the practical training nexus requirement. Check O*NET for the occupation's standard requirements to confirm alignment before filing your I-983.
What STEM degrees are eligible for IT Service Management STEM OPT jobs?
Degrees in computer science, information systems, computer information systems, and management information systems are the most common pathways. Engineering management and operations research degrees can also qualify for roles with a strong systems or process optimization component. The degree must appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List by CIP code. Your DSO can confirm whether your specific program qualifies before you submit your STEM OPT application to USCIS.
How do I verify that an employer is enrolled in E-Verify for STEM OPT?
Ask the employer's HR team directly for their E-Verify Company ID number before you accept an offer. You can cross-check enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool. Active enrollment, not just historical participation, is required for the STEM OPT extension to remain valid. If an employer loses E-Verify status after you start, you're required to report the change to your DSO within five business days.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an IT Service Management role?
Your I-983 must describe how your specific duties apply knowledge from your STEM degree, list measurable learning objectives tied to those duties, and outline how your employer will supervise and evaluate your progress. For IT Service Management, strong objectives include developing incident classification models, improving SLA compliance rates, or implementing ITSM process improvements. Generic descriptions like 'gaining experience in IT' won't satisfy USCIS review and will delay DSO approval.
Where can I find IT Service Management jobs open to STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists IT Service Management roles at employers enrolled in E-Verify, so you can confirm STEM OPT eligibility before applying. Standard job boards don't filter by E-Verify status, which means you can spend weeks pursuing positions that can't legally hire you on a STEM OPT extension. Migrate Mate narrows the pool to employers whose compliance status is already verified.
