Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in IT Technical Support
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. Computer science, information systems, and cybersecurity codes typically qualify, but not every IT-adjacent program does.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters directly whether their company is enrolled in E-Verify before you invest time in interviews. IT staffing firms and smaller MSPs frequently miss this requirement, which disqualifies them as STEM OPT employers regardless of role fit.
Build an I-983 training plan around real deliverables
Work with your supervisor to tie your I-983 learning objectives to specific IT support projects, not generic job duties. USCIS reviewers look for measurable goals like ticket resolution metrics, infrastructure projects, or certifications you'll complete on the job.
Target employers with H-1B filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter IT Technical Support roles by employers who have filed H-1B visa petitions before. Prior H-1B filings signal that a company understands work authorization requirements and has infrastructure to sponsor you after your OPT period ends.
Cross-reference prevailing wages before negotiating
Look up the wage level for your job title and metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before you negotiate an offer. Employers filing an LCA for future H-1B sponsorship must meet the prevailing wage, so knowing Level I and Level II thresholds strengthens your position.
Use O*NET to frame your specialty occupation case
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for Computer User Support Specialists or Network Support Specialists to identify the education and skill requirements USCIS uses when evaluating whether a role qualifies as a specialty occupation for future H-1B sponsorship.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Technical Support role qualify for STEM OPT?
It depends on your degree's CIP code, not the job title alone. If your degree in computer science, information technology, information systems, or a related STEM field appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, and the employer can demonstrate the role applies your degree knowledge, you qualify. Your DSO authorizes the extension based on the degree, not the job description.
What happens if my IT Technical Support employer isn't enrolled in E-Verify?
You cannot work for them on a STEM OPT extension. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement under SEVP regulations, and there's no waiver or workaround. If you discover an employer isn't enrolled after starting work, you're at risk of violating your status. Always confirm E-Verify enrollment before signing an offer letter, and get confirmation in writing from HR.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an IT Technical Support position?
Your I-983 must document specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not just a list of job duties. For IT Technical Support, that means naming concrete goals such as developing network diagnostics skills, completing a security certification, or reducing mean time to resolution on a defined system. USCIS expects a clear connection between what you'll learn and your degree field. Your employer's authorized signatory must co-sign the plan.
Does cap-gap protection apply if my H-1B is selected and I'm on STEM OPT?
Yes. If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT EAD expires and your petition is selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working in your IT Technical Support role during this period without a gap. USCIS publishes the cap-gap extension rules each cycle.
Where can I find IT Technical Support jobs with verified E-Verify employers?
Migrate Mate filters IT Technical Support listings by employers with confirmed E-Verify enrollment and prior H-1B filing history, so you're not manually vetting every company. This matters for STEM OPT students because even a strong offer from a non-enrolled employer disqualifies you from the extension. Searching through Migrate Mate narrows your list to employers already positioned to support your authorization.
