Verify your degree's CIP code eligibility
Check USCIS's STEM Designated Degree Program List to confirm your degree's CIP code qualifies before applying. Degrees in computer science, information systems, and management information systems are commonly listed, but not all IT-adjacent fields are included.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask your recruiter or HR contact to confirm E-Verify enrollment during the offer stage, not after. An employer can want to hire you and still be ineligible if they haven't completed E-Verify registration, which delays your start date.
Align your I-983 training plan to the analyst role
Your I-983 must map learning objectives directly to your IT Operations Analyst duties, such as incident response workflows, monitoring tools, or infrastructure management. Generic training plans draw DSO scrutiny and can delay extension approval.
Target employers with infrastructure and NOC teams
IT Operations Analyst roles sit inside network operations, cloud infrastructure, and IT service management functions. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers who have actively hired in these practice areas and are set up to support STEM OPT authorization.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Look up the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location using the OFLC Wage Search before finalizing your offer. STEM OPT doesn't set a wage floor, but knowing the prevailing wage helps you evaluate whether the role is structured for future H-1B visa sponsorship.
Submit your STEM OPT extension application 90 days early
File your STEM OPT extension with USCIS at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires. If you file on time and your OPT expires while the application is pending, your work authorization automatically continues for up to 180 days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Operations Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It can, but eligibility depends on two factors: your degree's CIP code must appear on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List, and your job duties must connect to that degree field. Roles involving system monitoring, infrastructure management, or IT service operations typically satisfy the connection requirement when tied to a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related discipline.
How do I verify that an employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify maintains a public employer search tool where you can look up a company by name or FEIN to confirm enrollment. Ask the employer directly during the offer stage and request their E-Verify company ID. If an employer isn't enrolled, they cannot legally employ you on a STEM OPT extension, and enrollment can take several weeks to complete.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an IT Operations Analyst role?
Your I-983 must describe how the role's day-to-day responsibilities connect to your STEM degree. For an IT Operations Analyst position, that means detailing learning objectives around topics like incident response, network monitoring, system reliability, or cloud infrastructure management. Vague descriptions such as 'general IT support' aren't sufficient. Your DSO and employer both sign the form, and USCIS can request it during an audit.
What happens to my work authorization if my OPT expires while my STEM extension is pending?
If you file your STEM OPT extension application before your initial OPT end date, your work authorization continues automatically for up to 180 days while USCIS processes the application. This cap-gap provision only applies if you filed on time. If you miss the filing deadline, your authorization lapses immediately and you cannot continue working until USCIS approves the extension.
Where can I find IT Operations Analyst jobs that support STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists IT Operations Analyst roles at employers that meet STEM OPT eligibility requirements, including E-Verify enrollment. You can filter by role type and location to find positions where the employer is already set up to sponsor or support work-authorized candidates, which removes a significant barrier early in the process.
