Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an IT Systems Analyst
Confirm your CIP code qualifies
Not every computer science or information systems degree maps to an approved STEM CIP code. Check your degree's CIP code against the official DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before applying, so you don't discover an eligibility gap mid-offer.
Verify employer E-Verify enrollment upfront
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension begins, not just willing to enroll later. Ask the recruiter or HR contact to confirm their E-Verify company ID during the screening call, not after the offer.
Use OFLC Wage Search to anchor salary talks
IT Systems Analyst prevailing wages vary by metro area and experience level. Pull the Level I through Level IV wage data from OFLC Wage Search for your target city before negotiating, so your expected salary aligns with what the employer is required to certify.
Build your I-983 training plan around real deliverables
Your I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree field, not a generic job description. Work with your DSO and hiring manager to map IT systems analysis tasks, such as requirements gathering and system integration, to your degree coursework before your extension start date.
Target roles matching your O*NET occupation code
IT Systems Analyst positions are classified under a specific O*NET occupation code that signals STEM OPT compatibility to experienced hiring managers. Filtering by that code when browsing Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have already hired in this category and understand the training plan requirements.
Time your extension filing around the 90-day window
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be filed at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. Missing that window creates an authorization gap that can disrupt active employment, so confirm your DSO submits the I-765 recommendation to USCIS well before that deadline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Systems Analyst role qualify for STEM OPT?
IT Systems Analyst positions typically qualify for STEM OPT when the role requires applying knowledge from a STEM-designated degree and the employer is enrolled in E-Verify. The qualifying connection is between your specific degree's CIP code and the analytical or technical functions of the job, not just the job title. Your DSO confirms eligibility when approving your I-983 training plan.
Which STEM degrees make you eligible for the 24-month extension in this role?
Degrees in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, management information systems, and related fields with approved CIP codes on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List qualify. A degree in business administration, even with an IT concentration, may not qualify unless the specific CIP code appears on the list. Verify your CIP code with your DSO before accepting an offer.
What does the I-983 training plan need to cover for an IT Systems Analyst position?
Your I-983 must detail how the IT Systems Analyst role provides practical training that directly relates to your STEM degree. For this position, that means documenting learning goals around system requirements analysis, enterprise architecture, data modeling, or integration work tied to your coursework. Your employer's supervisor signs off on the plan, and your DSO must approve it before USCIS processes your extension.
How do I find IT Systems Analyst employers who are already enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify enrollment is self-reported by employers and is not always visible on job postings. Migrate Mate filters IT Systems Analyst listings to surface employers with documented STEM OPT hiring history, which is a strong signal of active E-Verify enrollment. You can also ask recruiters directly for their E-Verify company ID, which enrolled employers can provide immediately.
What happens to my work authorization if my employer files an H-1B petition before my STEM OPT ends?
If your employer files a cap-subject H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT EAD expires, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year, or until USCIS makes a decision, whichever comes first. Your status must be valid on April 1, the H-1B start date, for cap-gap to apply. USCIS provides guidance on maintaining continuous employment during this period.
