Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Senior IT Support Specialist
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM OPT Designated Degree Program List. Computer science, information systems, and cybersecurity CIP codes typically qualify, but IT management or general business IT programs sometimes don't.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before signing anything. A Senior IT Support role at an otherwise great employer won't qualify for your STEM OPT extension if E-Verify enrollment is missing.
Target employers with active IT infrastructure teams
Larger enterprises, federal contractors, and healthcare systems almost universally maintain E-Verify enrollment due to compliance obligations, making them reliable targets for STEM OPT authorization. Use Migrate Mate to filter Senior IT Support roles by verified E-Verify employers.
Negotiate I-983 training plan details early
Push to define specific learning objectives, supervisory structure, and performance metrics in your I-983 before your start date. USCIS scrutinizes vague training plans for IT support roles, so concrete skill benchmarks tied to your STEM degree strengthen your extension application.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark prevailing wages
Look up the SOC code 15-1232 for IT support specialists in your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before salary negotiations. Offers below the prevailing wage can complicate future H-1B sponsorship from the same employer.
Apply during cap-gap if your OPT expires mid-cycle
If your initial OPT ends before October 1 and your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf, the cap-gap provision automatically extends your work authorization. Document this status clearly with HR so your IT access and employment records stay uninterrupted.

Find Senior IT Support Specialist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior IT Support Specialist role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not just the job title. If your bachelor's or higher degree is in computer science, information technology, cybersecurity, or another field on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, and the role directly applies that training, you qualify. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before filing the I-983.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my STEM OPT employer?
Every employer who employs you on a STEM OPT extension must be enrolled in E-Verify at the specific site where you work. A company-wide enrollment doesn't automatically cover subsidiaries or newly acquired offices. Verify the exact worksite enrollment status with HR before your extension start date, since a lapse in enrollment invalidates your authorization.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an IT support role?
Your I-983 must describe how the Senior IT Support Specialist position applies and develops the STEM knowledge from your degree. That means listing specific technical skills you'll practice, your supervisor's qualifications, measurable learning goals, and how the role relates to your academic field. Vague descriptions citing only general IT duties are a common reason USCIS sends follow-up requests.
How does cap-gap work if my OPT expires before October 1?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your OPT EAD expires and you're selected in the lottery, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization through September 30 of the fiscal year. You can continue working as a Senior IT Support Specialist during this period without a new EAD, but your employer's HR team must document the cap-gap status correctly in their records.
Where can I find Senior IT Support Specialist jobs with E-Verify employers?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for STEM OPT students, surfacing Senior IT Support Specialist roles at employers already enrolled in E-Verify. You can also cross-reference O*NET for the occupational profile under SOC code 15-1232 to confirm how the role's typical duties align with your degree for I-983 documentation purposes.
