Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an IT Consultant
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. IT Consultant roles often require computer science, information systems, or management information systems, confirm your specific program qualifies before submitting applications.
Filter for E-Verify enrollment upfront
Ask your campus recruiter or HR contact to confirm E-Verify enrollment before your first interview. Consulting firms that staff client sites sometimes hold enrollment at the staffing entity level, not the client, clarify which legal entity signs your offer letter.
Use O*NET to build your I-983 training plan
The I-983 requires you to document how your role connects to your STEM degree. Pull the O*NET occupation profile for IT Consultants to identify the knowledge domains and skills your DSO needs to approve your training plan before your 12-month OPT expires.
Target consulting firms with H-1B filing history
On Migrate Mate, filter IT Consultant roles by employers with active H-1B visa LCA filing history. Firms that regularly sponsor H-1B petitions have established immigration infrastructure, making them far more likely to support your STEM OPT extension and subsequent H-1B sponsorship.
Negotiate your start date around DSO timelines
Your DSO must update your SEVIS record and issue a new I-20 before your STEM OPT extension is approved. Build at least 90 days between your offer acceptance and your start date so USCIS has time to process your extension application without a gap in authorization.
Understand cap-gap protection for consulting roles
If your employer files an H-1B petition for you before your OPT expires, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. Confirm with USCIS guidance that your I-20 reflects the cap-gap extension before your current EAD end date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Consultant role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on two factors: your degree's CIP code and how the role is defined by your employer. IT Consultant positions tied to systems analysis, software implementation, or data architecture typically qualify when your degree is in computer science, information systems, or a related STEM field. Your DSO confirms eligibility based on your I-20 and the job description you submit with the I-983.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my IT Consultant employer?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. For consulting firms that place you at client sites, the legal entity on your offer letter must hold the E-Verify enrollment. Ask HR for the company's E-Verify employer identification number and verify enrollment status directly through E-Verify before accepting an offer.
How do I complete the I-983 training plan for an IT Consultant position?
The I-983 requires you and your employer to document how your day-to-day consulting work relates to your STEM degree. Use the O*NET occupation profile for IT Consultants to identify the technical knowledge areas your job covers, then map those directly to your degree's core coursework. Your employer signs the plan, and your DSO reviews it before submitting your STEM OPT extension application to USCIS.
Can I work at a client site as an IT Consultant on STEM OPT?
Yes, but your employment relationship must remain with your E-Verify-enrolled employer, not the client. Third-party placement arrangements where the client controls your day-to-day work can raise issues with USCIS's practical training requirement. Your I-983 training plan should reflect the work you perform and be signed by a supervising employee at your enrolled employer, even if you're on-site with a client.
Where can I find IT Consultant jobs that support STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists IT Consultant roles filtered for employers enrolled in E-Verify and with documented H-1B LCA filing history, so you can identify companies already familiar with sponsoring international talent. Search by job title and filter by STEM OPT eligibility to focus your applications on roles where the employer understands the extension requirements and the I-983 training plan process.
