It is imperative that Suvoda staff working with clients, end-users, or the systems that client and end-users interact with understand the clinical trial industry, regulations, Suvoda’s software products and processes, and especially the specificities of the unique trial in question before taking any actions they may alter the data of the system in question.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Technical Consultant
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM OPT designated degree program list. Computer science, information systems, and engineering management codes commonly support Technical Consultant roles, but borderline codes like business analytics require your DSO to confirm eligibility before you accept an offer.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before your start date
Ask your recruiter for the company's E-Verify employer ID and verify active enrollment through the E-Verify employer search tool. Consulting firms that place you at client sites must themselves be enrolled, not the client, since your direct employer files the I-983 training plan.
Build a targeted employer list using DOL disclosure data
Search Migrate Mate to find Technical Consultant employers with verified STEM OPT and H-1B filing history. Prioritizing companies that have sponsored similar roles reduces the time you spend vetting employers who have never navigated OPT paperwork for consulting positions.
Map your degree field to the consultant role description
Your offer letter's job duties must connect directly to your STEM degree field for a valid I-983 training plan. For Technical Consultant roles, frame responsibilities around systems architecture, data modeling, or software implementation rather than general project management, which draws closer DSO scrutiny.
Negotiate your start date around I-983 approval timelines
Your DSO must sign the I-983 training plan before you begin work, and revisions requested by your employer can take one to two weeks. Build at least three weeks between your offer acceptance and your proposed start date so paperwork delays don't push you past your OPT authorization window.
Use the cap-gap period strategically if selected in H-1B
If your STEM OPT end date falls before October 1 and you're selected in the H-1B lottery, the cap-gap provision automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. Confirm with USCIS guidelines that your employer has filed the H-1B petition before your EAD expires to preserve uninterrupted authorization.

Find Technical Consultant JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does my STEM degree qualify me for the OPT extension in a Technical Consultant role?
Your degree must appear on the DHS STEM OPT designated degree program list and must relate directly to the Technical Consultant duties in your I-983 training plan. Degrees in computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, and applied mathematics commonly qualify. Your DSO confirms eligibility based on your CIP code, not your job title alone, so bring your offer letter when you meet with them.
Does the Technical Consultant employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes. Your direct employer, meaning the company paying your wages and signing the I-983 training plan, must be actively enrolled in E-Verify for your STEM OPT extension to be valid. If you work through a staffing agency or consulting firm that places you at client sites, the agency is your employer of record and must hold E-Verify enrollment, not the end client.
What should the I-983 training plan include for a Technical Consultant position?
The I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, such as applying systems integration methodologies, designing technical architectures, or implementing enterprise software solutions. Vague descriptions like 'general consulting support' are insufficient. Your employer signs the plan, commits to supervision, and must evaluate your progress formally at the six-month and twelve-month marks throughout your extension period.
How do I find Technical Consultant employers who are already set up to hire STEM OPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to browse Technical Consultant roles at employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and a history of sponsoring OPT and H-1B workers. Targeting companies that have navigated STEM OPT paperwork before saves time during offer negotiations and reduces the risk of delays caused by HR teams unfamiliar with I-983 requirements or OPT authorization windows.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my H-1B petition is pending on October 1?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your EAD expires and you are selected in the lottery, the cap-gap rule extends your STEM OPT work authorization automatically through September 30. You can continue working as a Technical Consultant during this period. USCIS guidance specifies that your employer's timely filing is what triggers cap-gap protection, so confirm the receipt notice before your EAD end date.
