Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a QA Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Your STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree's CIP code matching the STEM-designated list maintained by ICE. Computer Science, Information Technology, and Engineering Management codes all qualify for QA roles, confirm yours with your DSO before targeting employers.
Check E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Any employer sponsoring your STEM OPT extension must be actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name to confirm enrollment status before you sign an offer letter.
Map your QA role to an O*NET occupation code
Your I-983 training plan requires a specific occupation code. Pull the O*NET profile for Quality Assurance Analyst or Software Quality Engineer to find the SOC code your employer needs to list, which also anchors your prevailing wage tier.
Use Migrate Mate to find QA roles at E-Verify employers
Filtering for E-Verify enrollment manually across job postings wastes time. Migrate Mate surfaces QA Engineer positions at employers already verified for STEM OPT eligibility, so you're only applying where your extension can actually be authorized.
Draft your I-983 training goals before your offer stage
Employers unfamiliar with STEM OPT often stall at the I-983 because they don't know what goes in Section 4. Bring a draft with pre-filled learning objectives tied to your QA role, automation testing, defect lifecycle management, CI/CD pipeline work, to speed up sign-off.
File your STEM OPT extension application 90 days early
USCIS allows you to apply up to 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Submit your I-765 within that window so your cap-gap protection covers any processing delay and you stay continuously authorized to work through the transition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a QA Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, information systems, computer engineering, or a related discipline. The role itself must also provide practical training directly related to your degree. Your DSO confirms eligibility by matching your degree's CIP code to the STEM-designated list, not the job title alone.
What does the I-983 training plan require for a QA Engineer position?
Your I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your QA role, an supervision structure, and an evaluation schedule. For QA Engineers, objectives typically cover test automation frameworks, defect tracking methodologies, and software development lifecycle participation. Both you and your employer sign the form, and your DSO must receive it before authorizing the extension.
How do I confirm my QA Engineer employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Use the E-Verify employer search function to look up the company by name or employer ID number. Enrollment must be active at the time your STEM OPT extension is authorized, a lapsed or pending enrollment disqualifies the employer. Confirm before you accept an offer, not after, since reversing a signed agreement creates timeline pressure.
What happens to my work authorization if my H-1B is selected but not yet effective?
Cap-gap protection extends your OPT work authorization automatically if your H-1B visa petition is filed before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery. Your authorization continues through September 30 of that fiscal year. You don't need to file a separate application, USCIS updates your status based on the petition receipt.
Where can I find QA Engineer jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists QA Engineer roles at employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and a track record of hiring international students. Searching there cuts the time you'd otherwise spend vetting employers individually, and you can filter specifically for positions open to STEM OPT candidates.
