Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Oracle Database Administrator
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to a STEM-designated field. Your DSO can confirm eligibility. Degrees in computer science, management information systems, and information technology consistently qualify for the STEM OPT extension for DBA roles.
Filter employers by E-Verify enrollment status
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before you start work. Use Migrate Mate to filter Oracle DBA roles by verified E-Verify employers, so you don't invest interview time in companies that can't legally hire you.
Target Oracle-heavy industries with LCA filing history
Financial services, healthcare systems, and federal contractors run large Oracle environments and file LCAs regularly. Cross-reference DOL disclosure data to identify employers who have sponsored database roles before, signaling familiarity with the immigration paperwork your hire requires.
Build your I-983 training plan around DBA competencies
Your I-983 must connect your Oracle DBA duties to your STEM degree's learning objectives. Document skills like performance tuning, backup and recovery, and schema design. A vague training plan is one of the most common reasons USCIS flags STEM OPT extensions for review.
Ask about H-1B sponsorship intent before the offer stage
STEM OPT gives you up to 36 months total, but H-1B visa sponsorship timelines mean your employer must file no later than your third April of employment. Raise sponsorship intent during late-stage interviews so you're not blindsided after your authorization window closes.
Check prevailing wage for your Oracle DBA level before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up wage levels for database administrators in your target metro area. Employers who offer below Level I prevailing wage are unlikely to successfully sponsor an LCA later, which creates problems when you transition from STEM OPT.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Oracle Database Administrator role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, provided your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, information technology, or management information systems. The role itself must also be directly related to that degree. O*NET classifies database administrators under a STEM-aligned occupational category, which supports eligibility, but your DSO must confirm your specific CIP code qualifies before you apply for the extension.
What E-Verify requirement applies to STEM OPT employers?
Every employer hiring a STEM OPT student must be enrolled in E-Verify before the employment start date. This isn't optional, and a company that enrolled in E-Verify after you started won't satisfy the requirement retroactively. You can confirm enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool. Browse Oracle DBA roles at Migrate Mate, which filters for E-Verify-enrolled employers.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for a DBA role?
Your I-983 must describe how your Oracle DBA duties connect to the STEM field of your degree. Include specific learning goals tied to database design, performance monitoring, security administration, or Oracle-specific tools like RMAN or Data Guard. Both you and your employer's authorized representative must sign it, and USCIS can request it during any review of your extension.
How does cap-gap protection work if I'm on STEM OPT and my employer files for H-1B?
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your STEM OPT EAD expires and USCIS selects it in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. Your EAD doesn't need to be renewed during this period. If the petition isn't selected, your STEM OPT authorization ends at its original expiration date, so having a contingency plan matters.
Can I work as a contractor or through a third-party staffing agency on STEM OPT?
Yes, but the arrangement must meet USCIS requirements. The company where you actually perform work must sign the I-983 as the employer of record if they control your day-to-day tasks. Staffing agency arrangements for STEM OPT are scrutinized more closely, so confirm with your DSO that the specific setup satisfies the training relationship requirement before accepting an offer.
