Verify your CIP code matches systems analysis
Your STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code. Computer and Information Systems (CIP 11) and Management Information Systems (CIP 52.1201) both qualify, but confirm with your DSO before applying.
Check E-Verify enrollment before every application
Only employers actively enrolled in E-Verify can legally hire you on STEM OPT. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name before submitting any application to avoid wasting time on ineligible employers.
Draft your I-983 training plan around specific systems deliverables
Generic training plans get rejected. List concrete learning objectives tied to the Systems Analyst role, such as requirements gathering, data modeling, or ERP implementation. Your employer's supervisor must co-sign and detail how each objective connects to your degree.
Target employers with active LCA filings for systems roles
Employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for Systems Analyst positions through DOL already understand STEM OPT compliance. Use Migrate Mate to filter for companies with verified E-Verify enrollment and LCA filing history in this occupation.
Apply 90 days before your OPT end date to avoid authorization gaps
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be filed no more than 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Filing late leaves no buffer for processing delays and can create an unauthorized gap in your work authorization.
Negotiate your job title to align with your I-983 training objectives
If your offer letter says 'Business Analyst' but your degree is in Information Systems, ask HR to use 'Systems Analyst' or 'IT Business Analyst' so your title reflects the technical scope documented in your I-983 training plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Systems Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, Systems Analyst positions typically qualify when your employer can demonstrate the role requires a STEM degree and when your own degree falls under an eligible CIP code, such as Computer and Information Systems or Management Information Systems. Your DSO confirms eligibility based on your specific degree program before recommending the extension to USCIS.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
STEM OPT rules require your employer to be actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. You can search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name or employer identification number before accepting an offer. E-Verify enrollment must be in place before your I-983 training plan is submitted and your extension begins.
What goes into an I-983 training plan for a Systems Analyst position?
Your I-983 must list specific learning goals tied to your Systems Analyst duties, such as conducting requirements analysis, designing system specifications, or supporting software integration projects. Each goal must connect directly to your STEM degree field. Both you and your employer's designated supervisor must sign the plan, and it must be on file before your STEM OPT extension start date.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my employer loses E-Verify enrollment?
If your employer's E-Verify participation is terminated while you're on STEM OPT, your authorization to work for that employer ends. You have 60 days to find a new E-Verify-enrolled employer, update your I-983, and notify your DSO. Failing to act within that window puts you out of status. Use Migrate Mate to identify Systems Analyst roles at employers with confirmed E-Verify enrollment.
Does the cap-gap rule protect me if my H-1B is selected in the lottery while I'm on STEM OPT?
Yes. If your H-1B visa petition is filed before your STEM OPT expires and USCIS selects it in the lottery, the cap-gap provision automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as a Systems Analyst at the same employer during the cap-gap period without any break in authorization, provided your employer remains E-Verify enrolled.
