Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Business Data Analyst
Confirm your CIP code qualifies
Pull your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code from your transcript or DSO and cross-reference it against DHS's STEM Designated Degree Program list. Statistics, computer science, and information systems CIP codes typically qualify; a general business degree often doesn't without a quantitative concentration.
Filter job postings by E-Verify status
Before applying, confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify by searching the E-Verify employer search tool directly. Many analytics teams at consulting firms or regional companies opt out, which disqualifies them from hiring you on a STEM OPT extension regardless of role fit.
Target LCA-filing employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to identify employers with active Labor Condition Application filings for data analyst roles. This filters your search to companies already familiar with work authorization requirements, cutting the time you spend educating hiring managers about STEM OPT.
Prepare your I-983 training plan before the offer
Draft the learning objectives and supervisor evaluation sections of Form I-983 tailored to the Business Data Analyst role you're targeting. Arriving with a near-complete training plan shows employers the extension process is manageable and accelerates their HR sign-off.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Look up the SOC code 15-2051 wage level for your target metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing rate, so knowing the floor protects you from low-ball offers that create compliance risk.
Understand cap-gap if your OPT end date overlaps October
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. File your I-765 renewal for the STEM OPT extension early so you have continuous authorization if the H-1B path also opens.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Data Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your job duties align with a STEM-designated CIP code on the DHS list and your degree falls under a qualifying field such as statistics, computer science, mathematics, or information systems. The role itself isn't automatically STEM-eligible; the connection between your specific degree and the analyst function is what USCIS evaluates when your DSO recommends the extension.
What does an employer need to do to hire me on STEM OPT?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. They also need to sign Form I-983, which documents your training objectives, supervision structure, and evaluation schedule in the Business Data Analyst role. The signed I-983 goes to your DSO before the extension is recommended, so start that conversation with HR as soon as you have an offer.
How do I find Business Data Analyst jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with Labor Condition Application filing history for data and analyst roles, which signals familiarity with work authorization sponsorship. Targeting companies that have filed LCAs reduces the friction of explaining your status and increases the chance the employer already has an E-Verify account and an HR process in place.
What happens to my work authorization if my STEM OPT expires while I'm waiting for an H-1B decision?
If your employer submitted an H-1B petition before your OPT or STEM OPT end date and you were selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization automatically through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working in your Business Data Analyst role without interruption during that gap, but you must remain employed by the same petitioning employer.
What is Form I-983 and what does it need to cover for a data analyst position?
Form I-983 is the mandatory training plan that documents how your Business Data Analyst role advances your STEM education. It must specify learning objectives tied to your degree field, identify your direct supervisor, and outline the evaluation schedule USCIS requires. Your employer signs it, your DSO submits it, and you must update it if your role, supervisor, or work location changes materially during the extension period.
