Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Business Analyst
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Computer science, information systems, and applied mathematics CIP codes commonly support Business Analyst roles, but interdisciplinary degrees sometimes require DSO confirmation.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask the recruiter for the company's E-Verify Company ID before you sign anything. Employers must be actively enrolled in E-Verify to hire STEM OPT students, and enrollment status can lapse, so verify directly rather than assuming large companies qualify.
Target BA roles with explicit technical requirements
Job postings that list SQL, Python, data warehousing, or systems architecture are stronger STEM OPT fits than general business analysis roles. The I-983 training plan must connect your STEM degree to the practical work you'll perform, so technical specificity in the job description helps.
Build your I-983 training plan around measurable outcomes
Draft your I-983 before your start date with specific learning objectives tied to your degree field, not generic job duties. USCIS expects the plan to show a direct relationship between your STEM coursework and the analysis methods you'll apply on the job.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with OPT hiring history
Filter your Business Analyst job search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with documented OPT and STEM OPT hiring activity. This cuts time spent on companies that haven't navigated the E-Verify and I-983 process before and are unlikely to move quickly.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search to see the DOL wage levels for Business Analyst roles in your metro area. Your offer must meet or exceed the applicable prevailing wage to support any future H-1B petition your employer might file.

Find Business Analyst JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not just the job title. Your employer's role must connect directly to a STEM degree that appears on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Degrees in computer science, information systems, statistics, or engineering frequently support Business Analyst positions, but you and your DSO need to confirm your specific CIP code qualifies before filing the extension.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for a Business Analyst job?
The I-983 must identify specific learning objectives that link your STEM degree to the practical skills you'll develop in the role. For Business Analyst positions, this typically means documenting how you'll apply data analysis, systems modeling, or quantitative methods from your coursework. Generic job descriptions aren't enough. Your employer signs the plan and is responsible for reporting material changes to your DSO within five business days.
Does my employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify to hire me on STEM OPT?
Yes, E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT employers, not optional. The employer must be enrolled before your STEM OPT extension start date. Ask for the company's E-Verify Company ID during the offer stage and confirm active enrollment status directly. If the employer isn't enrolled, they cannot legally employ you under STEM OPT, regardless of their intent to enroll later.
How does cap-gap work if my employer files an H-1B petition while I'm on STEM OPT?
If your STEM OPT is still valid when your employer files a timely H-1B petition for the October 1 start date, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 if your STEM OPT would otherwise expire before then. You can continue working for the same employer without interruption. USCIS issues updated I-20 documentation reflecting the cap-gap extension, which you'll need to show your employer for I-9 reverification.
Where can I find Business Analyst jobs where the employer already understands STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters Business Analyst listings by employers with verified OPT and STEM OPT hiring history, so you're not starting from scratch trying to explain E-Verify requirements or the I-983 process to HR teams who've never encountered them. Employers already familiar with STEM OPT hiring move faster and are less likely to withdraw offers over authorization concerns.
