Verify your CIP code qualifies first
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the official STEM OPT CIP code list before applying. Degrees in statistics, data science, and information systems typically qualify, but some business analytics programs do not.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Search the E-Verify employer database to confirm any company you're considering is actively enrolled. An employer that isn't enrolled cannot legally sign your I-983 training plan, which voids your extension eligibility entirely.
Frame your I-983 around analytics deliverables
When drafting your training plan with your employer, tie each learning goal to a specific reporting output: dashboard builds, data pipeline work, or KPI methodology. Generic descriptions of 'data analysis' draw more SEVIS scrutiny than role-specific milestones.
Use Migrate Mate to target verified sponsors
Filter your Reporting Analyst job search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with confirmed E-Verify enrollment and prior STEM OPT or H-1B visa filing history, so you're not discovering eligibility gaps after an offer is already on the table.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating salary
Run your target job title and metro area through the OFLC Wage Search to find the DOL prevailing wage level for Reporting Analyst roles. Knowing the Level I and Level II thresholds for your location lets you spot offers that may complicate a future H-1B LCA.
Request your offer letter before your OPT end date
Your DSO must receive the I-983 and employer countersignature with enough lead time to process the STEM OPT extension before your current EAD expires. Starting paperwork after an offer is verbal rather than written routinely causes avoidable gaps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Reporting Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not just the job title. Reporting Analyst positions typically qualify when your degree is in statistics, computer science, information systems, or a related STEM field listed on the official CIP code designation. The role itself must also involve practical application of your STEM training, which data-driven reporting work generally satisfies. Confirm your specific CIP code with your DSO before applying.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for this role?
Your I-983 must describe how the Reporting Analyst position directly applies your STEM degree through structured, supervised work. For this role, that means documenting specific learning goals tied to data analysis, report development, or quantitative methods. Both you and your employer sign it, and your DSO must certify it. USCIS expects concrete, measurable training objectives, not a general job description rephrased as a plan.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
You can search the E-Verify employer search tool, maintained by the Department of Homeland Security, to check whether a specific company is currently enrolled. Enrollment status can lapse, so search by the specific legal entity name that will appear on your offer letter, not just the parent brand. An employer that is not actively enrolled cannot participate in STEM OPT, regardless of their size or prior experience hiring international students.
What happens to my STEM OPT if my Reporting Analyst job ends before the 24 months are up?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends during the STEM OPT extension. During that window, you can find a new qualifying employer, change status, or depart the U.S. If you take on a new role, your DSO must update your I-983 to reflect the new employer before you begin work. Unemployment cannot exceed 90 aggregate days during the full OPT period, so tracking that total matters throughout the extension.
Where can I find Reporting Analyst jobs with employers that already support STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you search Reporting Analyst openings filtered by employers with E-Verify enrollment and a track record of sponsoring STEM OPT and visa-supported roles. Targeting employers with that history reduces the back-and-forth of explaining your work authorization from scratch and shortens the time between offer and a signed I-983 training plan.
