Verify your CIP code before applying
Your STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree's CIP code, not just the department name. Check your I-20 against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List to confirm your analytics-related degree qualifies before you start the extension process.
Filter for E-Verify employers early
Not every company posting data analytics internships is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for STEM OPT. Use Migrate Mate to search for roles at E-Verify-enrolled employers so you don't pursue positions that can't legally hire you on the extension.
Benchmark your offer against prevailing wage
Your employer must pay you the prevailing wage for your role and location under STEM OPT regulations. Look up the wage level for data analyst positions in your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating any offer.
Draft your I-983 training plan with specifics
A vague I-983 is the most common reason STEM OPT training plans get rejected by your DSO. Tie each learning objective to a concrete analytics deliverable, like building a dashboard or running A/B tests, rather than listing generic skills.
Target employers with dedicated internship compliance processes
Large companies with structured internship programs typically have HR teams familiar with STEM OPT reporting requirements, including the employer evaluation and the 10-day reporting rule. Smaller firms may offer great roles but struggle with the compliance obligations.
Use O*NET to align your degree to the role
If a recruiter questions whether your degree relates to data analytics work, the O*NET occupation profile for data analysts lists the standard knowledge and education requirements. Reference it when explaining how your STEM coursework directly supports the internship duties.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my STEM degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension for a Data Analytics Intern role?
Your degree qualifies if it appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, which covers fields like statistics, computer science, mathematics, information systems, and data science. The degree itself must qualify, not the job title. Confirm your degree's CIP code on your I-20 matches a listed program before submitting your STEM OPT extension application to your DSO.
Is E-Verify enrollment required for employers hiring STEM OPT interns in data analytics?
Yes, E-Verify enrollment is mandatory for any employer hiring a STEM OPT student, including internship positions. The employer must be enrolled before your extension is approved, not just before your start date. You can confirm a company's E-Verify status by asking HR directly or by searching for verified employers on Migrate Mate, which filters listings to E-Verify-enrolled companies.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Data Analytics Intern position?
The I-983 requires a detailed description of how the internship will develop STEM skills directly related to your degree. For data analytics roles, this means specifying the tools you'll use (SQL, Python, Tableau), the types of analyses you'll conduct, and measurable learning outcomes. Both you and your employer supervisor must sign it, and your DSO must approve it before your extension begins.
Can I work as a Data Analytics Intern while my STEM OPT extension application is pending?
If you apply for the STEM OPT extension before your initial OPT EAD expires, the cap-gap rule automatically extends your work authorization while the application is pending, as long as you remain in valid F-1 status. You can continue working without interruption. If your initial OPT expires before you file, you lose work authorization until the extension is approved, so timing your application is critical.
How do I find Data Analytics Intern jobs where the employer is already set up for STEM OPT hiring?
Many employers post internship roles without specifying their E-Verify status or STEM OPT experience, which creates extra due-diligence work for you. Migrate Mate shows data analytics internship listings filtered by E-Verify enrollment, so you can focus your applications on companies that are already compliant rather than vetting each one manually after you apply.
