Verify your CIP code before applying
Pull your official transcript and confirm your degree's CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. Analytics-adjacent degrees like Applied Mathematics or Management Information Systems qualify, but General Business does not, even if your coursework was quantitative.
Screen employers for E-Verify enrollment early
Ask your recruiter to confirm E-Verify enrollment before your first interview, not after receiving an offer. Consulting firms that staff client projects may be enrolled under a parent entity, so get the legal employer name and verify it directly through E-Verify's employer search.
Build a portfolio of SQL and visualization work
Analytics Consultant roles at consulting firms evaluate technical skills through case interviews and take-home datasets. Having documented projects in SQL, Python, or Tableau that show end-to-end analysis gives you a concrete answer when interviewers probe your hands-on experience beyond academic coursework.
Target STEM OPT roles using Migrate Mate
Search Analytics Consultant listings on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers with verified E-Verify enrollment. You can narrow by industry vertical so you're applying to firms where your STEM degree field aligns with the analytical methods the role actually uses.
Draft your I-983 training plan before your start date
USCIS requires a completed I-983 before your STEM OPT extension begins. Work with your DSO and hiring manager to map specific analytics deliverables to your learning objectives. Vague goals like 'gain experience' won't satisfy SEVP compliance review during site visits.
Understand cap-gap coverage if your H-1B is selected
If an employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection automatically extends your STEM OPT authorization through September 30. You don't need to stop working, but your employer must maintain E-Verify enrollment through that entire period.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension as an Analytics Consultant?
Your degree qualifies if its CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List maintained by the Department of Homeland Security. Degrees in Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Applied Mathematics, and Operations Research typically qualify. A Business Analytics degree may qualify depending on how your institution classified it at the program level, so confirm the exact CIP code with your DSO before applying for the extension.
Does an Analytics Consultant employer have to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a legal requirement for any employer hiring a STEM OPT student, and it must be active for the full duration of your extension. If you're placed at a client site through a staffing or consulting firm, the firm on your I-983 training plan, not the client, must be the enrolled E-Verify employer. Confirm enrollment status with your recruiter before signing an offer.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an Analytics Consultant role?
The I-983 must document specific goals that connect your analytics work to your STEM degree field, your employer's mentorship and supervision structure, a 12-month review schedule, and how the role provides practical training related to your area of study. For Analytics Consultant positions, this means describing deliverables like building predictive models, conducting statistical analyses, or developing data pipelines, not just listing software tools or job duties in general terms.
How does cap-gap work if I'm on STEM OPT and get an H-1B offer?
If your employer files a timely H-1B petition before your STEM OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. Your employer must remain E-Verify enrolled and your employment must stay within the scope of your I-983 training plan during that period. USCIS does not issue a separate document for cap-gap; your existing EAD and the receipt notice together serve as evidence.
Where can I find Analytics Consultant jobs with employers already enrolled in E-Verify?
Migrate Mate filters Analytics Consultant listings by E-Verify enrollment status, so you're not spending time applying to employers who can't legally hire STEM OPT students. You can also cross-reference a company's enrollment using the E-Verify employer search tool, which is publicly accessible and lets you confirm enrollment before submitting an application or accepting an offer.
