Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Data Analyst
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. A mismatch between your transcript and the listed CIP code can disqualify you from the extension even if your major sounds STEM-adjacent.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask your recruiter for the employer's E-Verify company ID or look it up through E-Verify's employer search. A data analyst offer from a non-enrolled employer cannot support your STEM OPT extension, regardless of role fit or company size.
Draft your I-983 training plan around data deliverables
Your I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to the role. For data analyst positions, name the tools, models, or reporting systems you'll work with. Vague plans get rejected. Align each objective to a skill your STEM degree prepared you to develop.
Target companies with active H-1B LCA filings
Employers who file Labor Condition Applications for data roles through DOL have already built sponsorship infrastructure. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-1B visa filing history in analytics and data science occupations before you apply.
Benchmark your offer against prevailing wage data
Run the job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search to see the DOL wage level for your role. If your offered wage falls below Level I or II for your metro area, your employer may face LCA compliance issues when you later need H-1B sponsorship.
File your extension at least 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be submitted no earlier than 90 days before your initial OPT end date. Late filing with no receipt notice leaves you without valid work authorization, so coordinate your I-765 timeline with your DSO well in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a data analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Data analyst roles typically qualify if your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as statistics, computer science, mathematics, information systems, or data science, and your degree's CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. The role itself must also use your STEM training, which you document in the I-983 training plan submitted to your DSO and co-signed by your employer.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
You can search the E-Verify employer database by company name to confirm enrollment status. Ask your recruiter for the E-Verify company ID as a backup. Enrollment must be active at the time you begin STEM OPT employment. If your employer is not enrolled, they cannot lawfully employ you under the STEM OPT extension, even if they are otherwise willing to sponsor future H-1B status.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a data analyst position?
The I-983 requires a description of how the position relates to your STEM degree, specific learning goals tied to your work, and a supervision and evaluation structure. For data analyst roles, this means naming the analytical methods, programming languages, or business intelligence tools you'll use and explaining how they connect to skills from your degree program. Your employer's authorized signatory must co-sign the plan before your extension begins.
How does cap-gap protection work if my STEM OPT is expiring during H-1B season?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT end date and USCIS selects it in the lottery, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You don't need to file anything separately. Your EAD may show an earlier expiration date, but the cap-gap extension is confirmed through your I-20 and USCIS records, not a new card.
Where can I find data analyst jobs that hire STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and H-1B filing history in data and analytics roles, so you're not spending time on companies that can't support your authorization. You can search by job title, location, and degree field to identify openings where STEM OPT students have a clear path through the extension and into H-1B sponsorship.
