Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in Database Architect
Verify your CIP code before applying
Cross-check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before you target Database Architect roles. Computer Science (11.0701) and Information Systems (11.0401) both qualify, but some adjacent degrees don't, and a mismatch voids your extension.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before your final interview round. You can also search the E-Verify employer database by company name to confirm enrollment status, since STEM OPT authorization depends entirely on it.
Frame your I-983 training plan around schema design
When your employer completes the I-983, the learning objectives section should map to specific Database Architect competencies: data modeling, performance tuning, and migration architecture. Vague entries like 'database work' invite DSO pushback and delay your extension approval.
Target companies with active LCA filings for database roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by DOL Labor Condition Application filings for database and data engineering occupations. Companies with recent LCA activity for these roles already understand E-Verify requirements and STEM OPT onboarding, which reduces friction during the offer process.
Check prevailing wage tiers before negotiating offers
Look up the wage level for Database Architects in your target metro using the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions. Employers filing an LCA must meet the prevailing wage, so knowing Level I through Level IV ranges tells you where an offer stands relative to compliance minimums.
Use cap-gap protection if your OPT expires during H-1B selection
If an employer files an H-1B visa petition before your STEM OPT end date and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30. Confirm with USCIS guidance that your I-20 reflects the cap-gap period before your OPT card expires.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Database Architect role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree carries an eligible CIP code. Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, and related STEM fields listed on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List all support a STEM OPT extension for Database Architect positions. The role itself must also align with your degree field on the I-983 training plan, which your DSO reviews before approving the extension request.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for a Database Architect position?
The I-983 must document specific learning objectives tied to your role, your employer's mentorship structure, and how the position connects to your STEM degree. For Database Architects, objectives should reference concrete skills like relational and NoSQL schema design, query optimization, disaster recovery architecture, or cloud database migration. Generic language fails DSO review. Your employer signs the form and must provide a named supervisor responsible for the training.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify before my start date?
Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name to check enrollment status. You can also ask your recruiter or HR contact directly, since STEM OPT regulations require E-Verify participation before your extension is valid. If a company isn't enrolled, your DSO can't approve the I-983 and your 24-month extension won't begin. Some large enterprises enroll by subsidiary, so confirm the specific legal entity that will employ you.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my employer changes ownership or name?
A change in the employing legal entity, including acquisitions, mergers, or subsidiary restructuring, can affect your STEM OPT status if the new entity isn't enrolled in E-Verify. You'd need a new or amended I-983 reflecting the updated employer information, signed by an authorized representative of the new entity. Notify your DSO as soon as a corporate change is announced so your authorization doesn't lapse during the transition.
Where can I find Database Architect jobs where employers are already set up for STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters Database Architect listings by employers with documented E-Verify enrollment and LCA filing history for technical roles. That filing history signals the employer has already navigated STEM OPT or H-1B onboarding before, which means they're less likely to withdraw an offer once they learn about the I-983 requirement or 60-day reporting obligations under STEM OPT regulations.
