Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to a USCIS-approved STEM field. Statistics, computer science, and information systems all qualify, but interdisciplinary degrees sometimes carry non-STEM CIP codes that block the extension.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters for their E-Verify Company ID or check enrollment status directly through the E-Verify employer search. A data-focused internship at a startup or research firm may lack E-Verify enrollment, making your STEM OPT extension invalid from day one.
Build your I-983 training plan around measurable analytics goals
Your I-983 must list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not just job duties. Frame goals around skills like predictive modeling, SQL query optimization, or dashboard development so your DSO and employer can sign off without revision requests.
Target employers with active STEM OPT hiring patterns
Use Migrate Mate to filter Data Analyst Intern roles by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and STEM OPT hiring history, so you spend time on applications where your work authorization is already understood.
Time your OPT start date to maximize the extension window
USCIS requires you to apply for the STEM OPT extension no later than 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Applying early gives you a 180-day cap-gap buffer if you later pursue H-1B visa sponsorship during the same authorization period.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark internship offers
STEM OPT employers must pay you the prevailing wage for your role and location. Pull the Level I wage for your SOC code in the OFLC Wage Search before you negotiate, so you can flag underpaying offers that may indicate the employer isn't prepared for OPT compliance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Analyst Intern role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree carries an approved STEM CIP code and the role directly applies that field of study. Data analyst positions typically align with STEM degrees in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or information systems. Your DSO confirms eligibility by matching your CIP code against the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List before recommending the extension on your I-20.
How do I verify that a Data Analyst Intern employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask the recruiter or HR contact for the company's E-Verify Company ID during the offer stage, before you accept. You can also search employer enrollment status through the E-Verify website. If the employer can't confirm enrollment, you can't use your STEM OPT extension there, regardless of how well the role fits your degree.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Data Analyst Intern position?
The I-983 must describe how the internship uses and develops skills from your STEM degree. For a data analyst role, list specific learning goals such as applying statistical methods to business data, building ETL pipelines, or producing reports using tools like Python, R, or SQL. Vague descriptions like 'gaining work experience' get flagged by DSOs and slow down your authorization.
Can I stay authorized if my employer files an H-1B petition while I'm on STEM OPT?
Yes, through cap-gap protection. If your employer files an H-1B petition before your STEM OPT expires and it's selected in the lottery, your work authorization automatically extends through September 30 of that fiscal year while USCIS processes the petition. You must remain employed with the same employer and maintain your F-1 status throughout this period.
Where can I find Data Analyst Intern roles that are verified for STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Data Analyst Intern positions filtered for employers enrolled in E-Verify, which is the foundational requirement for STEM OPT eligibility. Searching there saves you from spending time on applications at companies that can't legally employ you under the extension, and from discovering the issue after you've already started the offer process.
