Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Clinical Data Analyst
Verify your CIP code matches STEM eligibility
Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before applying. Degrees in biostatistics, health informatics, and computer science typically qualify, but applied statistics programs sometimes carry non-STEM codes that block the extension.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters for the employer's E-Verify company ID or check enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool. Clinical research organizations and academic medical centers don't always maintain active enrollment, even when they intend to sponsor.
Build your I-983 training plan around job duties
Draft the I-983 training plan using the specific tools and tasks in your offer letter, such as SAS programming, CDISC standards, or EDC system validation. Generic plans draw scrutiny from DSOs and can delay your STEM OPT extension start date.
Target pharma and CRO employers with LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to identify Clinical Data Analyst employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings. Companies that have filed LCAs for this role have already established prevailing-wage benchmarks and are more likely to have compliant onboarding processes for STEM OPT students.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Look up the prevailing wage for Clinical Data Analyst under SOC code 15-2051 in your target metro before negotiating. Employers filing an LCA must pay at least the DOL-set wage level, so knowing this floor strengthens your position and flags underpaying offers early.
Plan around cap-gap if your OPT expires mid-year
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition before your OPT EAD expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. Confirm your employer's H-1B filing timeline during offer negotiations, not after you start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Data Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as biostatistics, health informatics, or computer science and your employer is enrolled in E-Verify. The role itself doesn't determine eligibility; your degree's CIP code does. Confirm your CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before relying on the extension.
What does the I-983 training plan need to cover for a Clinical Data Analyst position?
The I-983 must outline specific learning objectives tied to your actual job duties, such as clinical data management, CDISC compliance, SAS or R programming, and FDA regulatory standards. It requires signatures from both you and your employer and must be submitted to your DSO before USCIS approves your extension. Vague or generic descriptions are a common reason DSOs reject the plan.
How do I verify that a Clinical Data Analyst employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
You can search the E-Verify employer database by company name to confirm active enrollment. Ask the recruiter directly for the E-Verify company ID as part of your offer due diligence. Enrollment must be active at the time your STEM OPT extension is filed, not just when you start. Pharmaceutical companies and large CROs typically maintain enrollment, but smaller site-management organizations may not.
Where can I find Clinical Data Analyst jobs that are open to STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters Clinical Data Analyst listings by employers with DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, which signals active sponsorship infrastructure. This helps you focus on companies that have already navigated the compliance steps required for STEM OPT students rather than starting that conversation from scratch.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my employer is acquired or restructured?
If your employer undergoes a merger or acquisition, the new legal entity must also be enrolled in E-Verify. A lapse in E-Verify coverage at the successor employer can jeopardize your STEM OPT status. Notify your DSO immediately if a corporate change affects your employer's name or EIN, and confirm the successor's E-Verify enrollment before continuing to work.
