Confirm your CIP code qualifies first
Not every STEM degree automatically qualifies for the 24-month extension. Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the official STEM Designated Degree Program list that USCIS maintains. Data science, statistics, and computer science CIP codes are typically covered, but applied social science variants sometimes are not.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before applying
Any employer that hires you on STEM OPT must be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask your recruiter directly before the final interview stage. You can also confirm enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool, which lists participating companies by name and location.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Before accepting a Data Analytics Specialist offer, run the job title and work location through OFLC Wage Search to see the prevailing wage for that role and metro area. Your employer's Training Plan under the I-983 must reflect compensation that meets this threshold.
File your I-983 training plan before day one
Your employer and DSO must complete and sign the I-983 before your STEM OPT extension begins. Data Analytics Specialist roles should map training objectives to specific technical competencies like predictive modeling, SQL, or BI tools. Vague learning goals are the most common reason DSOs push back on plan approvals.
Target employers with documented data team structures
USCIS requires that STEM OPT training provide a genuine learning experience, not just production work. Companies with dedicated data engineering or analytics teams are better positioned to write an I-983 that reflects mentorship and skill development, which protects your extension if USCIS ever audits.
Search Migrate Mate to filter for E-Verify employers
Instead of guessing which companies qualify, use Migrate Mate to browse Data Analytics Specialist roles already filtered for E-Verify enrollment. That eliminates the back-and-forth of confirming eligibility mid-process and lets you focus applications on employers ready to support STEM OPT from day one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my STEM degree qualify me for the 24-month STEM OPT extension as a Data Analytics Specialist?
It depends on your specific degree, not just your job title. Your degree's CIP code must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program list published by USCIS. Degrees in statistics, computer science, information systems, and data science typically qualify. A degree in a non-STEM field does not qualify even if your Data Analytics Specialist role is technical. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before applying.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for a Data Analytics Specialist role?
The I-983 must describe specific technical and professional goals tied to your Data Analytics Specialist position. Generic language is not enough. Your employer should document training in areas like statistical analysis, data visualization, machine learning, or database querying, along with mentorship structure and how performance will be evaluated. Your DSO reviews and co-signs the plan before your extension is approved.
Does my employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify to hire me on STEM OPT?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for any employer hiring a STEM OPT student. If the employer is not enrolled at the time you start work, your STEM OPT extension is not valid. Confirm enrollment before you sign an offer. You can check employer participation status directly through E-Verify's employer search, or you can browse pre-filtered roles on Migrate Mate.
What happens to my work authorization if I'm waiting on an H-1B while working as a Data Analytics Specialist on STEM OPT?
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT expires, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year while USCIS adjudicates the petition. You can continue working as a Data Analytics Specialist during this period without interruption, as long as your employer filed before your EAD end date.
How do I find Data Analytics Specialist employers that are already set up to support STEM OPT?
The most efficient approach is to focus your search on employers confirmed as E-Verify participants with existing STEM OPT hiring experience. Migrate Mate filters Data Analytics Specialist job listings by E-Verify enrollment so you don't spend weeks confirming eligibility on your own. From there, ask recruiters directly about their I-983 process and whether they've supported STEM OPT extensions before.
