Tips for Your Substation Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to voltage class
Hiring managers scan for specific voltage levels you've worked with, such as 115 kV, 230 kV, or 500 kV. Call these out explicitly in your experience bullets so your resume clears automated filters before a recruiter reads it.
List every design software you know
AutoCAD, ETAP, PSS/E, and SEL AcSELerator appear constantly in job postings. Put your software proficiencies in a dedicated skills section rather than burying them in job descriptions, where keyword scanners often miss them.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists substation engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Match protection relay experience to the posting
Postings often specify relay families like SEL, GE, or Schweitzer. If you've programmed or tested any of these, name them and the specific relay models in your resume to pass both automated screening and technical review.
Prepare a technical portfolio before interviews
Bring single-line diagrams, protection coordination studies, or relay settings sheets you've contributed to, redacted for confidentiality. Concrete deliverables differentiate you from candidates who only describe their work verbally.
Negotiate start dates around PE exam windows
If you're awaiting PE licensure results, let the hiring team know your expected date early in conversations. Many utilities will hold an offer or adjust your start date rather than lose a qualified candidate over a short wait.
Substation Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most substation engineers?
The companies hiring the most substation engineers right now include HDR, Kiewit, and WSP, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and Tennessee, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Investor-owned utilities, rural electric cooperatives, and large EPC contractors tend to drive the most consistent hiring volume for this role.
How many substation engineer jobs are remote?
About 22% of substation engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the field-intensive nature of most roles. Protection and control design, relay settings review, and engineering studies are the sub-areas most commonly offered with remote or hybrid flexibility, while construction support and commissioning roles almost always require on-site presence.
How do you become a substation engineer?
Earn a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, then focus coursework or early internships on power systems, protection, and high-voltage equipment. Pass the FE exam and accumulate field experience through entry-level roles at a utility or EPC firm. Pursue PE licensure as you gain years of experience, since most senior substation engineer positions require or strongly prefer it.
Can you get hired as a substation engineer with little experience?
Yes, utilities and engineering firms regularly hire new graduates into junior or engineer-in-training substation roles. Internships at a utility, power co-op, or engineering consultancy carry the most weight because they demonstrate exposure to real substation equipment and standards. Highlighting relevant coursework in power systems, relay protection, or switchgear during your application also helps close the experience gap.
What does the substation engineer interview process look like?
Most processes start with a recruiter screen followed by a technical interview covering power systems fundamentals, protection coordination concepts, and your familiarity with relevant software and standards. A design exercise or case study is common at mid-level and senior levels, asking you to work through a protection scheme or review a single-line diagram. A final round with a hiring manager or project director typically covers project experience and how you handle field coordination challenges.
Where can I find and apply to substation engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to substation engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
