Surgical Dental Assistant Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a surgical dental assistant in Alabama?
To work as a surgical dental assistant in Alabama, you must register with the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners, which oversees dental assistant credentials in the state. Most employers require completion of an accredited dental assisting program, available at schools such as Wallace State Community College and Bevill State Community College. Surgical-specific skills are typically built through on-the-job training under a licensed dentist or oral surgeon, and obtaining a Certified Dental Assistant credential strengthens your application considerably.
Which companies hire surgical dental assistants in Alabama?
Employers hiring surgical dental assistants in Alabama right now include Huntsville Hospital Health System, UAB Medicine, and Baptist Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alabama's mix of large hospital-affiliated dental programs, private oral surgery practices, and regional multi-specialty dental groups means openings appear consistently across both metro and suburban markets.
Which Alabama cities have the most surgical dental assistant jobs?
The Alabama cities with the most surgical dental assistant openings are Birmingham, Huntsville, and Gadsden. Birmingham leads because it anchors the state's largest concentration of hospital systems, oral surgery practices, and dental school-affiliated clinics, while Huntsville's rapidly growing population has expanded demand for specialty dental care, and Mobile's regional medical infrastructure supports a steady stream of oral and maxillofacial surgery positions.
Are there remote surgical dental assistant jobs in Alabama?
Yes, but they are rare. Surgical dental assisting is a hands-on, chairside role that requires physical presence in a clinical setting, so the vast majority of positions are fully on-site. About 13% of surgical dental assistant openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those limited exceptions typically involve administrative or coordination duties rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a surgical dental assistant in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited dental assisting program at an Alabama community college, such as Wallace State or Jefferson State, and then applying directly to oral surgery practices for a chairside trainee or general dental assistant role that includes surgical exposure. UAB Medicine and larger Alabama dental service organizations regularly bring on assistants who are new to surgical settings and provide structured on-the-job training. Earning your Alabama Board of Dental Examiners registration and a current CPR certification before you apply puts you ahead of candidates who have not yet cleared those requirements.
Where can I find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Alabama?
You can find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Alabama on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to each position that fits.
